My 10 Favorite Films of 2011

To briefly explain, these are not what I consider the “best” films of the year. This is my list of films that I call my favorite. I do think several of these films are among the best of the year, but the list is incredibly biased. That said, here are my 10 favorite films of 2011.

10. Take Shelter

Take Shelter is quite a trip of a film. I always enjoy a good mind-f*** of a film. What I loved about Take Shelter was that it addresses the…

50/50 is one of the best films of the year.

The one thing I was most happy to find in 50/50 was heart. Making a comedy about a guy who gets cancer is kind of risky, especially when you put Seth Rogen in a significant role. You don’t want to focus too much on the laughs while completely glossing over the seriousness of cancer. Writer Will Reiser does a fantastic job coming up with a perfect balance of gut-busting laughs and truly sincere characters to feel for. And with the direction…

FRIGHT NIGHT doesn't waste any time to start being awesome.

Fright Night is a film that doesn’t waste any time. Right at the opening we get a great scene to set the tone of the film, and then the rest of the movie just sort of follows through. Every bit of clichéd build up is taken care of in the first act of the film so that the second and third acts can just get down to business and do its thing. And it has a lot of fun doing its thing.

I, sadly, have not seen the original film, though it is a film I am aware of. I’ve been meaning to see… Continue

M.A.R.S. on Film Episode 1

My friend invited to start a podcast with a few of his friends, so here's our first episode. It's still a work in progress, so we're looking for input and thoughts on how to improve our show.

NotInWater returns a little disoriented from his trip to the DARK OF THE MOON.

To start this review off, I enjoyed the first TRANSFORMERS. It was a stupid, but fun introduction to what could have been a great franchise or a solid stand-alone film. Then REVENGE OF THE FALLEN came out and just sucked every bit of life out of me for close to three hours. As I explain here, I absolutely loathed the second movie. It later was said…

A SUCKER PUNCH is kind of an understatement.

Zack Snyder is an interesting director. I definitely think he's a very talented individual with a very good eye for the craft. 300, WATCHMEN, GUARDIANS and SUCKER PUNCH all have a very unique visual style and are all very well made films. However, SUCKER PUNCH is going to make me question anything he has a part in that involves him putting a pen to paper.

I love the whole idea and concept of SUCKER PUNCH.…

BATTLE: LOS ANGELES is one hell of a ride

The first trailer to BATTLE: LOS ANGELES was sheer brilliance. It showed very little, just some pretty amazing scenes and a very effective song over it. It created one of the most effective teasers I've ever seen. It made that chill go up my spine every time I watched it. Then the second trailer came out and I was less impressed. It still looked great, but two things worried me: Kids and PG-13. Luckily neither of those detract from the overall experience of what…

RANGO is probably going to give Pixar a run for their money this year!

With THE RING and PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN, Gore has taken two existing properties and churned out two films that surpassed the original material-yes, THE RING was better than RINGU regardless what you fanboys/fangirls say. With RANGO, he adds a third to his books. It's a retelling of the classic VALIANT LITTLE TAILOR (or SEVEN IN ONE BLOW) but it's still one of the most original films to come out in years.

Valentine's Day + Unconventional Love Stories

“Random thoughts for Valentine’s Day 2004. Today is a holiday invented by greeting card companies to make people feel like crap.” Those are the very first lines to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind. While it may no longer be 2004, that line still holds true to this day.

I’ve always had a disliking for Valentine’s Day.…

Sixteen Stories of Life (Short Story)

Revised version of my story. Looking for general feedback and what not.

-----------------

I‘ve only gone skydiving once before. Most people ask me if I was scared and I always tell them I wasn’t. “Aren’t you afraid you’re going to die?” Not really. I’ve never been afraid. Besides, skydiving really isn’t as dangerous as people think. I’m pretty sure anyone would rather go skydiving than be in my situation. I’m not on a free fall from a plane right…

Netflix Pix of the Month: February.

Netflix is the best thing to happen for home entertainment since HBO. The video store was great but the convenience of Netflix trumps it hands down. Having DVD’s mailed out to people’s houses was a great idea that put them ahead of the game and is even putting some video chains out of business, even Blockbuster is struggling to keep up.

Easily the greatest thing that Netflix has done is their Instant Streaming feature. While their selection isn’t as vast as their collection…

My 10 Favorite Films of 2010

I've now been writing movie reviews and doing these "top/bottom" movies of the year for about 3 years now. Out of those 3 years this one is by far the hardest to chose just 10 movies to put as my favorite. This year has had so many great films and some pretty nice surprises. This is the first time I've had to decide between 5 movies in the first 3 months to put in my top 10. Usually that quarter of the year is battling for worst films. There…

My 10 Most hated films of 2010

I finally got around to watching all the movies I feel were necessary to watch in order to come up with a good "worst of" list for 2010. I wasn't quite as determined to see every bad film this year as I was last year, but I still was probably seeking out more atrocities than I should have been. I'm not sure why I put myself through them, but I feel you…

Yet another HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 1 review.

I was hesitant about THE DEATHLY HALLOWS at first. I was excited, yes, but reserved. David Yates kind of let me down with THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE (my second least favorite movie of the series ahead of CHAMBER OF SECRETS) after liking THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX (my second favorite up until now right behind PRISONER OF AZKABAN) so much. While I didn't dislike HBP, it just felt like it lacked something to it. Mr. Yates, you've redeemed yourself. THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PT.1 is…

No, the movies aren't the best place to hide

Ever have your pre-show interrupted by police frisking and escorting two kids out of your theatre 5 minutes before show time? Neither have I, but I witnessed it tonight.

Two kids were hiding out in the movie theatre hoping to get away with some criminal activity. They stole an iPod and some cash from someone at Fun Factory. Together, they probably used every brain cell they had to come up with the brilliant plan to wait it out next door in the movie…

UNSTOPPABLE Review

Inspired by true events, but not telling the story of those true events. I'm addressing this to the people who are going to complain about how the movie isn't the same as what actually happened. The movie is fiction and has no illusions about that. Talking to my friend who works with trains and knows the actual story that UNSTOPPABLE is based on, I knew right from the opening scene that this wasn't telling the same story. The actual even happened in Ohio and the train…

Tales from the Theatre: Want another pair because you're stupid? Sorry, can't help you.

An idea taken from Zeke Slider's "Morons at the Movies," which is brilliant, thought I'd share some of my own stories whenever they come up. Not sure why, but people seem to be even dumber than usual at movie theatres.

Today was a where my lack of faith in humanity is only strengthened. Not long after starting work a lady walked into the theatre only to ask if we were open. "No ma'am, we're closed. We just like leaving the doors unlocked for wanderers to…

15 Films that will always stay with me.

The rules: Don't take too long to think about it. Fifteen films you've seen that will always stick with you. List the first fifteen you can recall in no more than fifteen minutes. Tag fifteen friends, including me, because I'm interested in seeing what films my friends choose. (To do this, go to your Notes tab on your profile page, paste rules in a new note, cast your fifteen picks, and tag people.)

I picked these movies…

Logging into THE SOCIAL NETWORK was one of the best things I've done this year.

I was one of the people who kind of brushed off the idea of a "facebook movie" when the rumors about it were floating around. It was only when David Fincher (The mastermind behind SE7EN and FIGHT CLUB) was announced as Director where I really gained any kind of interest in the film. Then having about Aaron Sorkin (CHARLIE WILSON'S WAR and THE WEST WING) penning it and Jesse Eisenburg as the lead, it became a movie I really wanted to see. And over the past month…
