'Jurassic Park 4' Producer Updates Us On Film's Status

The purposed fourth installment of the 'Jurassic Park' franchise remains one of those somewhat ephemeral projects that we've been talking about for years, but has never actually manifested into anything. This year there has been…

Open Discussion: Is it better to get hands on experience, or to learn the basic fundamentals first?

Growing up I always had a passion for writing and the arts, and by arts I mean everything from music, to singing, to acting I love it! And respect it as a craft, as a I would for someone sharing a passion for knowledge and being a scholar. So naturally I've always aspired to be a sort of renaissance woman of the arts, I wanted to sing, act, write..especially write. Writing is my first love after all, and deciding at a young age that this is what I wanted to do. As I got older I would…

Here's the second installment on my attempts at completing an assassin's mission in Assassin Creed: Revelations. Kept failing and restarting but, that is the plight of a perfectionist... or someone with too much time on their…

How To Format You Live Action Sitcom Script In Open Office

Sitcoms are great. Who doesn't love a laugh? Sitcoms can range from mediocre to great. I firmly believe that the person who creates the next “Seinfeld” is out there, but what if they have the idea and the story for a show, but don't know how to format it? Well, Earthlings, that's where I come in. I'm here to try and de-mystify the process of formatting for you once again. So, without further ado, let's get into it...

**This tutorial will deal strictly with formatting your script. For…

Ilene Engelberg - How to Write a Bio

Don’t know how to write a bio on yourself? You’re not on your own. Bio writing is challenging; it forces you to rank what’s most important about you. It’s a daunting task to boil down your entire professional life into one paragraph that’s clear, concise, and works for you. Luckily, you don’t have to start your bio from scratch. Before writing your bio, let’s see what Ilene S Engelberg has to…

Ilene Engelberg - Screenplay Writing Tip
If you're in the process of writing a script or planning on writing one in the near future, I strongly recommended that you read as many scripts in your particular genre as you can. Both so you can get a feeling for the structure as well as to see how…

How to Write a Screenplay in Open Office

The height of accomplishment for any fan of cinema is to write a film of their very own. We've seen plenty of movies, and naturally, we think that we could write one ourselves. But then the realization hits us: How? So, the natural thing to do would be to do a Google search, and we'd come across forum after forum telling us this works, and that works. Read this book, and go to this site. And before you know it, your head is spinning…

At what point is it acceptable to point out that someone is an idiot on Spill?

There seems to be some controversy about when it's alright to call someone on the stupid shit they've said on this site. I've defended Hector a time or two, not because he's never said anything beyond reproach, but because I was under the impression that he is very young. Based on his profile pic and his writing, I pegged Hector at around 10 years old. However, a cursory glance at Hector's page the other day revealed that Hector is, in fact, 16 years old. In my opinion, 16 is well past the…

An Unrequested Interruption: My Writer's Origin Story

When you discuss writing with other people, an annoying little question comes up every so often.

"When did you decide you wanted to become a writer?"

Bitches: they're always so fucking interested and stuff.

This annoys some writers because they don't…

Part II: Notetaking

In UWT #1, we talked about brainstorming and how starting with plot in mind rather than character is a more effective timesaver. With this, you might've looked at the "Notetaking" subtitle and asked yourself Isn't he gonna teach me how to… Continue

Unrequested Writing Tips for Slow Starters and Procrastinators # 1

I know you didn't ask for this. However, being a straight-edge kid with no teaching degree or writing group, I'm lacking in opportunities to channel my inner ex-con seminar instructor. So, instead I wrote this post, explaining where I fucked up in life--err, I mean in my writing--and tell you how to avoid a similar fate.

Fresh Start

I never thought writing a blog would be this hard...

What do I write about? Where do I start? With a review, a short story, a rant? I'm not the most critically minded. Video games? That's been done to death I suppose. I could write about what Spill was like before podcast. Fuck, I could even attempt a short story about a boy and his pet dinosaur. I consider all these options as I sit here staring at a screen, music playing in my…

24 hour comic and story

Anyone who has ever created art in a hurry probably knows the familiar feeling of diminishing returns as the sun gets higher and the due hour becomes close at hand. What you have "gained" in time you lose in productivity. The day before, you hadn't intended on spending all that time awake, doing, jack shit.

But a product appears. It may not have looked like your initial vision, the pacing may have inexplicably hastened in the last act, and you may have summarized where you meant to… Continue

How to Make Indy Comics

It is a lot of fun.

When I'm not in class, teaching, writing, getting tipsy, or on set, you can probably find me talking to someone about The Anthology. The Anthology is an annual comic book comprised of usually 9-10 one shots made by members of Chico State's CBC (Comic Book Coterie). Our first book only had five submissions and was a poor show of the potential talent available at our campus. The second year was much better. We drew from many more artists, and we had our first… Continue
