Adapted from the legendary comic strip, "The Spirit" is a classic action-adventure-romance told by genre-twister Frank Miller. It is the story of a former rookie cop who returns mysteriously from the dead as the Spirit to fight crime from the shadows of Central City. I have plenty of mixed thoughts with this movie, Its a film that follows the same formula as Sin City but it doesn't have the same impact to the viewer. It is full of non-stop action and adventure, its is visually amazing, with grea…

The Spirit is the very first directing endavour by well-known graphic artist Frank Miller. Known for his unique and dark visual style, Frank Miller gained comic-book fame by drawing a darker version of Batman (which was to later inspire the Dark Knight) plus writing and illustr…

MY...GOD...
I never thought I would ever see a movie as bad as
Battlefield Earth in my lifetime. Well, as usual, optimism is never rewarded.
Let me start by saying this; I'm not a fan of Frank Miller. His cinematic material is all about style over substance in my opinion. As if
300 and
Sin City were not enough, we get
The Spirit. But at least
300 and
Sin City were Miller's own work. The Spirit was created by Will Eisner, who passed away in 2005. The me…

well, I have a temporary solution for you. I didn't even know this existed till someone told me in passing when I discussed the Spirit:

in 1987, they attempted to do the movie, it was a made-for-TV movie aired on ABC. It stared Sam Jones (Flash Gordon) as the Spirit. It surprisingly retains alot of things like his sidekick Ebony White. Well, I wont waist your time, check it out here…

OH, MY GOD!
I didn't expecti it to be terrible... Just mediocre. I left angry..... This is a perfect guide to how to NOT make a movie.
It tries to be campy. It tries to be clever and witty. I didn't laugh once. The acting is awful. Gabriel Macht is trying to be the gruff cop, but he sucks at it. Eva Mendes is basically reading her lines while sounding sexy. Samuel L. Jackson looks like he's trying to make the film more enjoyable, but it doesn't work. Oh! And Scarlett Johansson! She has two per…

Ok, so I really wanted to see this.
I love the graphic on it, so I figured, 'Oh! This is going to be kind of a funny, cheesy, beautifully colored tale of the rebel no-quite-a-cop superhero. I really wanted to give it a chance. Plus! Who doesn't love a sexy man in a suit :).

Here's my first review for this site. Sorry for the nature, it just is what it is:
Frank Miller has lost much if not all of his credibility as a film maker. In 2008's The Spirit, based on the landmarking comic series by Will Eisner, Frank Miller has proved to us that he's incapable of going solo, to call it inadequate would be an insult to the word. The finished product of Frank Miller's solo peice is a completely forgettable 2 hour 5 minutes pictures on screen. I'm just thankful that Will Eisn…

SOUTH SHORE @ THE CINEMAS:
The Spirit Reviewed
Luke Veinot
The Spirit is not a great movie. It’s not bad either. I found it entertaining overall but a closer look reveals only a few minor mistakes by rookie director writer
Frank Miller. He shows up critcs by not killing one single female. For the first time ever.

Frank Miller, comic artist and writer of such recognizable works as
Sin City and
300…

SOUTH SHORE @ THE CINEMAS:
Frank Miller Do You or Don’t You Want My Love?

Frank has done two things in his career. Made great comics and has f’ed up great comics. I spent a lot of time in November researching and reading Frank Miller’s work. His often dark themed work limits his range and he’s constantly fuelling Gail Simone’s “Women in Refrigerators” theory by slapping together some of the most unorthodox female charact…

Your List for 2008...might suck
Something bugs me around the holidays. This time of year, film fans bang their heads together and grind out their list of favourite films of the year. Our crowning jewel of the list would be our choice for best picture at the Oscars in the months ahead. Instead most of the time our lists are filled with personal favs that might never be considered for gliz or glam.
My problem is "early" lists. I mean it's not even December 25th,…
