A man named the Once-ler (Ed Helms) arrived in his cart and chopping down Truffula trees he did start. But the Lorax (Danny DeVito), who spoke for the trees, came along to preach to the Once-ler, "What you do is wrong." But the Once-ler ignored the tiny tree imp. He kept chopping trees until they were limp. Now many years later, the trees are…

Hey there, Sploich here with my final Oscar predictions for the 84th Academy Awards. I got a 56% accuracy rating on my nomination predictions so I'm hoping to get even better with my winner predictions. The thing is, this year is a bit tricky. My head and my heart are telling me several different things based on the other award ceremonies this year (not including the Golden Globes because, as I've stated before, they mean nothing) as well as the way the Academy typically votes. I'm just…

Hey there, Sploich here with my (SERIOUSLY FINAL) predictions for the 84th Academy Award nominees. I decided to start going to the 15th with my predictions because posting them on the 1st every month was causing some problems. So here is my very VERY last updated nominee prediction list:
Best Supporting Actress
Bérénice Bejo for The Artist
Jessica Chastain for The Help
Janet McTeer for Albert Nobbs
Octavia Spencer for The Help
Shailene…
UPDATE!
So, the Academy has released an updated shortlist for Visual Effects, meaning I have to change my nominees. I have done so and the new finalized predictions can be seen at http://www.sploich.com/oscars/predictions.php. For my blogged version of the list, please go to…

Hey there, Sploich here, and Happy New Year! Over at my site, http://www.sploich.com/, I've been predicting the Oscars since about mid-2011 and today marks my last update before the actual nominees are announced. This is a hard year to predict as the nominees, no matter what they are, are going to be rather underwhelming. Regardless, here is what I have come up with and am stuck with from here on out (until February when I predict the…

If I learned anything today it's that an ape can crash through numerous windows without every getting a scratch on him. But while Rise of the Planet of the Apes is pretty heavy on the CGI, it's also a surprisingly well-told story with some great characters. Unfortunately it's also the product of a well known franchise and doesn't let you forget it no matter how hard you try.
When a presentation goes awry, Will Rodman…

With Disney on its way back to classic quality and Pixar dominating in the art, it's always nice to see another company putting out products that can, if not rival, at least pose some competition. And while Rio does still feel like your average animated film from 20th Century Fox, it excels in its fluid animation and brilliant use of modern songs mixed with classic samba beats.
Blu (Jesse Eisenberg) is a domesticated blue…

Note: This review is a lot more spoiler-heavy than most of my reviews, but I felt it necessary in order to convey my feelings.
Art films can be good. I'm the last person I'd expect to hear that from, but after watching The Tree of Life I just need to reassure myself. Remember 2001: A Space Odyssey? Whether you love it or hate it you have to at least agree that it has a story and that even when it gets weird, at least it keeps the same general tone throughout. The Tree of Life has…

It's disappointingly rare to get a superhero movie that feels and acts like a film first and a popcorn flick second. What's even more pleasantly accepted is a film that balances both of these aspects seamlessly, creating an entertaining experience and an incredible movie in one go. And as shocked as I am to admit it, Captain America: The First Avenger is one of those movies.
Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) is a scrawny man with a heart of gold, willing to…
