The Hunger Games (or Battle Royale with Cheese) – HM Movie Reviews

Okay, I wasn’t ready dreading seeing this movie but the hype around it makes it seem like it was going to be the next book series that translates into a movie franchise that has success both critically and financially. Harry Potter & The Lord of the Rings was one of the few that first did that well into the 2000s, however, many have tried to follow them and some of them…

The Hunger Games: Film, Liturature, and Society *Spoiler Alert*

It can be a bit of a taboo in the world of cinema to directly compare a film to the source material. However, certain messages float around in the world of art and entertainment that need attention, and that is what this story of the Hunger Games has to offer.

We humans exist in an odd state; we are so…

Movies that are said to be overrated, that I believe are not

Movies are always met by praise, and panning, but at times there are some films that are so popular, they live a life of their own. Some films such as "Transformers" is one of those films, where the average crowd loves it immensely, but us movie buffs, and film critics just think it's a piece of crap. Some movies that are not like "Transformers" that are actually considered good films are also sometimes met with the same right as "Transformers" and are…

Could It Be Considered Doomsday Soon for Superman Fans?

As many of you know already, last year (or earlier this year, I'm not entirely sure) the estates of creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster claimed back the rights to Superman's origin, so Warner Bros./DC can never make a comic, TV show, or movie about Superman's origin again (unless maybe without their approval). Well, it seems like we may never see another Superman movie entirely which puts Christopher Nolan and Co.'s…

Are We Seeing the Death of Originality in Hollywood Movies?

All right, I've wanted to do this blog for a very, very long time. It's a question that ponders the mind of every movie fanatic on the Internet especially the ones on sites like Ain't It Cool News, Cinematical, CHUD, and Spill Movie Reviews. Are we seeing the slow death of originality in film? Well, I'm going to try and guess the answer as best as I can.

I would say that we are not really experiencing a "death" of originality, it's more or less a period where movie studios are being… Continue

My (Life In Chartreuse) Top 10 Films of 2009

As the year comes to a close, it’s time once again to look back on the year in film. There was a slew of great films to be seen, and ‘09 was a year dominated by sci-fi and animation. So without further ado, here are my favorite films from 2009.

10.) Avatar- Master director James Cameron's 3D sci-fi epic is engaging, gorgeous, and sets a new standard for visual effects and what can be done with animation. The Na’vi creatures… Continue

The Little Guys - Episode 3: "World Builder"

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm late posting this again, but by less than an hour and it was all because I was busy seeing a late-night showing of "Daybreakers" (good flick, go see it).

Today's short film, I've known about and been a fan of for quite a while. World Builder was shot in one 16 hour shooting day with only two actors against nothing, but greenscreen and spent 2 years in post-production and if you ask me, it was all worth the wait.

It became so popular online that there… Continue

'District 9' Movie Review

Where to start with this one? I have no idea. What I can say about it, is this...

'District 9' is a science-fiction movie with heavy doses of other genres, such as: action, adventure, gore-fest and mockumentary. The small touches include dark humour, impressive sets and props, as well as the effects that come in subtly, at times, to produce an amazing vision; most notably, the mothership that hovers over Johannesburg which you can… Continue

District 9 Caption Contest winner!

We've finally chosen our lucky winner for the District 9 caption contest - and what a turnout it was, as we received over 300 entries. Apparently a lot of you had plenty to say about a naked Korey hanging out with a South African alien. Of course we could only pick one, and no, we could not choose anyone from outside the U.S.. The studios orders, not ours. And the winning comment was...
