Strange, Captivating First Trailer For 'Upstream Color'

I hadn't heard of the upcoming film 'Upstream Color,' and I'd hazard many of you hadn't either. However, what instantly had me interested to watch the movie's first trailer was the fact that it is written and directed by Shane Carruth. If that name seems vaguely familiar, it's because Carruth also wrote and directed the fantastic…

Is 'The Goon' Dead?

It's been a long, strange road for 'The Goon.' The animated big screen adaptation of Eric Powell's comic book series was at one time in the hands of director …

Magnolia Acquires Sundance Hit 'V/H/S'

Given that none of us here at Spill are actually at Sundance this year, we have to rely on buzz from our colleagues to keep us updated on which films we should keep an eye out for later. One movie getting incredibly enthusiastic, and almost universal praise this year is the horror anthology 'V/H/S.' The film is a…

Clip From Sundance Film 'The Pact'

Normally, I don't like film clips. They typically give too much away and I'm often left wondering why I didn't just wait to see the film in its entirety. However, this clip from Nicholas McCarthy's 'The Pact' is so brief, giving just the slightest hint at what it's about, that it's actually pretty effective. Quick setup,…

Troll Hunter Sundance 2011 review

I sincerely want to love Troll Hunter, the latest in a batch of Scandinavian horror movies that have been shipped stateside. I want to love it for its tense cat and mouse moments, I want to love it for its impressive ideas towards shaky cam cinematography, and most of all I want to love it for the trolls themselves, massive behemoths scouring the Norwegian countryside for a stray sheep or unsuspecting college student. Unfortunately, Troll Hunter is a mixed bag that brings down the good with an… Continue

Korey at Sundance 2011

James joins Korey again for another adventurous Sundance week. They talk about the movies they've seen so far - The Woman, The Devil's Double, the Tribe Called Quest documentary, and These Amazing Shadows - followed by tales of a racist rail, an action star's nipple, black people in Park City, and drunk girls.

We'll be podcasting more these shows and streaming them live as we record.… Continue

Kevin Smith's True Independence

Seventeen years ago Kevin Smith hit the independent film scene with 'Clerks'. The film became an instant hit at Sundance, and Smith became a hero to aspiring filmmakers everywhere. You all know the story - a young convenient store clerk saves up and shoots a small film at the place he works during off hours. Total budget? $27, 575. Total gross after US theater run? $3 million. Moral of the story? Anyone can make a film.

Today, Smith is not only telling people they can make…

Hobo With A Shotgun World Premiere review Sundance 2011

He's a guardian angel walking the streets, a vicious protector of the weak and innocent. He is the hobo with a shotgun. He is Rutger Hauer. Hobo with a Shotgun is the story of... well, the title pretty much says it all. Bad guys led by a enjoyably psychotic gang lord named Drake dominate the unnamed city that is the setting of the movie. Drake and his two equally messed up offspring, Slick and Ivan, terrorize the people of this tortured city uncontested until the arrival of Hauer's Hobo,…

my review of Frozen

I was lucky enough to catch frozen at Sundance this past Saturday. Being a skier and long time resident of Park City, Utah, I was incredibly excited to see this movie. Before the start of the film, the director Adam Green came out and gave a word of warning that in past shows audience members had fainted vomited, and left the theatre in droves. He warned that what we were about to see was the bloodiest, most disturbed movie ever to graze the silver screen. That was his opinion of the movie, now… Continue

Movies that move me

There are a few movies I've recently seen that I felt like reflecting on...plus I've wanted to write my first blog on here for a long time and finally my yearn for writing about movies has come and manifested itself:

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969)

I just saw this film today after having seen it on many top movie listings and knowing it's been regarded as a classic. It's been sitting on the top shelf of my… Continue
