Best Picture Oscar Nominee Reviews

To compliment our live Oscar podcast tonight, we thought it might be fun to go back revisit a few of the movies we reviewed in the Best Picture category, along with other categories in which they received a nomination. Why watch bland red carpet interviews when you can have a little pre-show fun here.

The Social Network VS The King's Speech

The Oscars are coming closer and closer. and the two in the running towards the Best Picture Award is the Social Network vs the King's Speech. Social Network was winning the race head first back in Jan. with various awards. As of January 29, 2011, the film has received 107 awards from 202 nominations compared to the King's Speech which has received 48 Awards only but contains twelve nominations, four more than the Social Network. (what do you expect, its a period movie)....And a…

2010 Academy Award for Best Picture - Predictions

I have come up with the ten films that will most likely be nominated for Best Picture.  Now these aren't the films I think are the best but the films I think have the highest chance of being nominated.  In no particular order, here they are:

  • Inception
  • Toy Story 3
  • The Social Network
  • Black Swan
  • The King's Speech
  • 127 Hours
  • The Kids Are All Right
  • Winter's Bone
  • The Fighter
  • True Grit

Alternative Films that could've have been Nominated for Best Picture Academy Awards (A Mashup parody blog)

I think this year's Academy Award Nominations for Best Picture has had a wonderful selection, but unfortunately not everyone agrees with the choices. Some complained that Avatar was unoriginal, Inglorious Basterds too talky, and so on and so forth. Most spill members downright hated some of the selections on the list. Well I think the proper solution to this would to combine the nominations together and you not only get better selections but better films as well. Check this… Continue

Oscar Prep: Avatar vs. Inglourious Basterds

Now the buzz I've heard in discussions regarding Oscar nominations, specifically Best Motion Picture, the two that seem neck-in-neck are Avatar and Inglourious Basterds. The reason is that Inglourious Basterds recieved Best Ensemble in the SAG Awards (whose sole purpose has become Oscar predictions) while Avatar got best film. Last year, the winner, Slumdog Millionaire, received ensemble instead of film and went on to get the Oscar for best film. Outside of that, typically SAG Award for best… Continue

Dorian Gray International Trailer and The Picture of Dorian Gray 1945

Well this was a surprise. I did not know, until I saw this trailer, that they were making doing another remake of The Picture of Dorian Gray. Big shoes to fill if it's going to compare to the 1945 version. It does have the chance at potential, however. Being 2009, they can further explore aspects of his character and behaviour, which in 1945 could only barely be hinted at. And Ben Barns is BEEEA-UUU-TIFUL! Visually... perfect casting. Let's just hope… Continue

'Milk' Blu-Ray Review

The recent Oscar contender makes its debut on Blu-Ray Home Video

The Film:

It can always be difficult to capture the essence of a historical figure in a biographical film. How does a film maker cover a massive time line and display the cultural significance of someone like Harvey Milk within the course of two hours? Honestly I don't know...but Milk… Continue

Can 'The Dark Knight' Pull Off A 'Best Picture' Nomination?

Can Batman & The Joker Set Aside Their Differences To Keep Their Eyes On The Oscar?

It's only November, meaning we still have about three and a half months until The 81st Academy Awards. There are still countless films awaiting release over the course of the next few months. But one film already had us talking Oscar nominations earlier in the summer: The Dark Knight.

Probably one of the most hyped films… Continue

6 films we forgot were so good

So many films make huge leaps and bounds then are forgotten within a few years. As I sit at work bored out of my mind, I figure this is my tribute to 5 movies that I believe were excellent films that should have stayed around longer than they did. Granted, I can't put every movie here, so this will be the ones I really felt died out and won't have the chance for a comeback next decade, much like The Warriors did when XBox turned the movie into a game. The list below are films I believe… Continue
