Gangster Squad Review

When someone says that there is a new crime film set in the '40s and '50s and it has people like Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin, Nick Nolte and plenty of other fantastic actors and actresses, you would expect it to either be Oscar caliber material or at the very least a very excellent crime drama…

Review: Gangster Squad (2012)

In a post WWII Los Angeles crime in running rampart through the streets. The police are either helpless to do anything or are being paid off. With little to nothing to stop him, Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) gains control over all the illegal syndicate run organizations in LA. One day Sgt. John O'Mara  (Josh Brolin) single handedly takes down one of Cohen's many brothels. However the criminals responsible are let go before even being brought back to the station. Taking note of his exceptional…

First Trailer For 'Gangster Squad'

When I heard 'Zombieland's Ruben Fleischer was directing a period gangster flick, I was pumped. Honestly, however, all I really demanded of it was that it was as fun as 'Zombieland.' If this trailer is any indication, …

My thoughts on "THE TREE OF LIFE" movie.

****Warning some spoilers******

I remember watching a trailer for this movie several months ago, and totally being sold on it at first sight. Why? because it  reminded me of 2001 Space Oddysey, which if you don't know, is one of my favorite movies.  Its surreal and full of visual depth, that, along with the music, leads the audience through the film with minimal dialogue.  These movies aren't for the masses, mainly because it really forces you to think about whats going on and how it…

Pretty Easy

easy_a_xlg Today was a pretty dull day here, and I decided I needed something to occupy my time with.  Thankfully, Netflix came to the rescue by providing me with a pretty easy outlet.  The movie I decided to watch today was the Screen Gems picture Easy A.  The movie,  rated PG-13, stars Emma Stone, Amanda Bynes, Penn Badgley, Thomas Haden church, Patricia Clarkson, Lisa Kudrow, and Stanley Tucci.  The movie…

State of Play: A nice and interesting thriller

State of play tells the story of U.S. Congressman Stephen Collins,an honorable appointee who serves as the chairman of a committee overseeing defense spending. But the murder of a congressman's mistress an the investigation of a pair of reporters along with the police department began to exhume a bunch of secrets. The plot is very well developed and convincing and the screenplay is twisty and engaging. Its that kind of movies with a lot of suspense and mystery, very good drama and a bit of… Continue

Movies that move me

There are a few movies I've recently seen that I felt like reflecting on...plus I've wanted to write my first blog on here for a long time and finally my yearn for writing about movies has come and manifested itself:

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969)

I just saw this film today after having seen it on many top movie listings and knowing it's been regarded as a classic. It's been sitting on the top shelf of my… Continue

'Milk' Blu-Ray Review

The recent Oscar contender makes its debut on Blu-Ray Home Video

The Film:

It can always be difficult to capture the essence of a historical figure in a biographical film. How does a film maker cover a massive time line and display the cultural significance of someone like Harvey Milk within the course of two hours? Honestly I don't know...but Milk… Continue

Milk: Another Van Sant great movie

Milk tells the real story of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man to be voted into public office in America. It is an inspirational drama, directed by Gus Van Sant, that reflects the intolerance and the lack of respect to gay people on the 70's decade. It is a film full of drama with some moments of maybe involuntary humor. The locations in San Francisco and the real footage makes the movie more realistic along with the very good costume design. The cast is wonderful, Sean Penn in the leading… Continue

The Biggest Movie Event of the Year! The Dark Knight, not the Oscars!

Two big things happened today. The first one is that the Dark Knight made over 1 billion dollars. Yes, that's right. It finally managed to do it! We all know bats are blind. The question is do they know the smell of cash? The Dark Knight does. Today, The Dark Knight went over the billion dollar mark worldwide, having officially clawed in $1,001,082,160 to date. Do you think our friends at Warner Bros. are doing happy dances and smoking cigars made of thousand-dollar bills? Think that they are… Continue

Harvey MILK Charity auction! (now with Spell check!)

Normally I'm not a fan of celebrity auctions and the like - but this is an interesting auction on what might be a little piece of history from one of the best films of the year for a good cause...during Oscar season. I can't find a reason that it's NOT newsworthy.
