I'm thinking of a number between one and ten, and... I don't know why.
I aggree that sometimes people throw out the race card without taking into account the feelings of the times they were written in but that doesn't discount the fact that Eisner's "Ebony" character in The Spirit was nothing less than a Sambo type racist caricature. Unlike Twain's Nigger Jim character Ebony wasn't pointing out any hypocrisy about racial values he was just steppin' fetchit blackface comedy relief with no redeeming value. Given that Eisner himself was the subject of racial bigotry due to his Jewish heritage he should have known better. I respect a lot of what Eisner did but Ebony is a dark stain on an otherwise incredible legacy.
