The major set back to me with any movie like this is you know how its going to end for the most part.
Even with the way Johnny Depp with bring a good light to the character and movie.
Its a story thats been told for too many years and will not surprise me I think.
I am just hoping this will not be another Charlie and the chocolate factory, but I am getting that feeling.
my point is, that a remake could POTENTIALLY be good. There are enough great examples to show it doesn't always fail: Batman, Scarface, Inglourious Basterds. You have a lot of crappy ones but that comes with the territory. But the common similarities the above movies have is that they needed to be remade to tell better stories than their predecessors did. For a film as flawed (plot-wise) as Akira, animating a 2 part film would be an interesting site to behold
