Sovereignty among the Na'vi

A friend of mine just brought up an interesting question about Avatar, and I thought some Spillios may be able to give some insight.By the end of the film, the chief and his next-in-line have been killed. How do they determine his successor? I'm guessing Jakesully would be a likely candidate one way or another (he married the chief's daughter, flew Turuk, and led the entire Na'vi race in a revolution). Is a democratic process or a monarchy? I'd guess the trees just tell them whom to appoint,…See More

On Coens and endings (includes spoilers)

It was just under two years ago that people started to complain about No Country For Old Men's lack of an ending. It was also around that time that I started to pull my hair out in frustration for people's stubborn-ness when they're wrong. Of course No Country For Old Men has an ending! It's right here!

I'm not saying there's no reason to complain. There is. Three quarters of the way through the film, a major development takes place off-screen (heard… Continue

The Ten Best Films You Haven't Seen - An Introduction

If you've read any of the reviews that I post on the threads, then you've most likely noticed that they're all written in a very rigid style, divided up into sections. I've found this method less and less creatively satisfying lately, and I'm going to try to stick to more straightforward reviews from now on. This leads to the dilemma of how to break myself from that style, which has been a crutch of mine for too long.

For this reason, and at the request of some fellow Spill members,… Continue

That word is SO overrated!

"Why then 'tis none to you; for there is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so. To me it is a prison."

- Hamlet, Act II, Scene 2

o·ver·rate (ō'vər-rāt')

tr.v. o·ver·rat·ed, o·ver·rat·ing, o·ver·rates

To overestimate the merits of; rate too highly.

- The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition

Was it a good cry?

I'm a sap when it comes to movies. While watching Up, I cried like a baby. Twice. This happens more often than I'd like to admit.

More often than not, it's a rewarding experience, cathartic because it causes us to reflect upon ourselves or the world around us. In some extreme cases (i.e. Requiem For A Dream, United 93), it won't feel as rewarding. I'll have to walk in the sunlight for a while to bring myself back to stasis, but I… Continue

Okay reading a story about people wanting to kill themselves after watching Avatar is bad enough...

But when they find a 17 year old "Depressed" guy from Sweden to talk to as their "example" of people who are depressed, makes me almost want to say "Let 'em kill themselves". Just another cause of trying to take your problems, and blaming them on something else. You don't get "Depressed" after watching 1 movie. That's a mental condition that takes days/weeks to form, and going to the point of being suicidal is something that takes a longer amount of time... or a seriously messed up head.
