As much as I like Total Recall, it doesn't hold quite as dear a place in my heart as RoboCop does. The more I learn about the Total Recall remake the less objection I have to it, honestly. One thing I think this version will have out over the original is casting Collin Ferrell as Quaid.
My major problem with the original was Schwarzenegger. Being a famous action star at that point, as well as a former Mr. Universe, made it difficult for me to believe him as Quaid. Part of the fun of watching the movie is trying figure out whether or not Quaid is, in fact, a secret agent. Casting the Governator in the lead took away all of that potential ambiguity. "Of course he's a trained agent! I mean, damn! Look at those biceps!" Ferrell, on the other hand, looks like someone who could certainly be a super spy, but could just as easilly be just another white-collar working stiff.
I've never read Phillip K. Dick, so his original story that inspired the 90's movie may have room for this remake to take things in a different and interesting direction. Count me as skeptically optimistic.
Unless of course the remake sucks and then I'll probably sound like one of those cynnical, know-it-all "Told you so!" assholes. Stay tuned!
