I just wondered, if you have thought about Jane Eyre & Wuthering Heights..
Jane Eyre is one of my favorite books..she was a strong woman capable of living without a man or needing him to support her..but she was drawn to one crazy SOB...I mean I could see why in some instances...he was pretty damn funny..but he was one messed up dude......but it seems to fit the pattern you first mentioned to me....
I understand what you mean about the pattern with Jane Austen's books..I just don't think it is as developed in the movies..so it isn't as noticeable..but yes, I can see your side of it as well...
And yes..there probably are many of movies that have been made that resemble that story time & time again.
I think that fact that this is something that you totally abhor, most likely in real life as well...gives you a stronger feeling about it...I get the impression that you would never be a push over..that you wouldn't want a man to depend on..you would have to be equal partners... man does not =happiness..lol=)
And Wuthering Heights?..that's a whole other story...
Funny..
I always thought Jane Austen was ahead of her time. She had a keen sense of wit & great understandinng of the complexities of the male/female relationship.
I don't think you can blmae chick flick on her...if anything her female characters are independent and are functioning quite well without a man in their life. They don't need a man to survive . The only problem is they were outclassed by men..it was the time they lived in..especially if a husband died..the property went to the bother, before it went to the wife.
I don't see how the check flick thing applies to Sense & Sensibility, Emma, or Mansfield Park.
The funny thing about Pride & Prejudice is it can appear to be that way...but again it is about class , perception, gossip ..I can see how it can look llike that ..maybe on the surface..but I don't see it...
And as far as 10 things I hate about you?..that is based on The Taming of the Shrew...so Jane Austen can't be held accountable for that one...
Not sure about the Asian films you mentioned..haven't seen any of them..maybe they are more obvious....
I just don't see how Jane Austen is responsible for the "Chick Flicks' we have come to know today.
At the end of the day..most woman are just looking for a decent guy..and I think that is why they still have that appeal.....but they aren't for everybody & not all women feel that way..so I can see why it would get to you...
Well i do like the wayans brothers movies i hated little man and white chicks wasnt to funny but all the other stuff they have done was pretty funny...
I am not looking forward to this movie they have coming out i mean a spoof on save the last dance ..Come on how long ago was that! I dont think it will be as bad as those other spoof movies like it wont get a FUCK YOU on the rating scale but it just looks like alot of bull to me..
Dammit, I laughed out loud at half of that!...which means I'll get suckered into it and it'll end up sucking donkey dicks except for those few scenes.
*sigh*
but obviously since i have an account on this site, it's safe to say that i like movies- or else i wouldnt be here
and that's all you really have to know right??
