The greatest martial artist ever who died much too soon. Creator of the martial arts system and philosophy Jeet Kune Do. A seriously tough badass. Most importantly, HE BEAT CHUCK NORRIS.
1940-1973
Actually, I sort of got that impression from the movie. That De Valera wasn't really interested in what happened to Ireland as a nation, just as long as he was the one that got the fame for being the leader of it.
While not claiming at all to be an expert on what really happened, the movie does sort of paint him as the "bad guy" that Michael Collins had to deal with as a "threat to peace" that was more personal than the British. While I don't know how the two really were like in real-life, the movie doesn't help De Valera's appeal as a leader of anything. Which is sort of sad, because I really like Alan Rickman, but in this role I was constantly going "Damn, what a dickhead". lol
