I'm very much with you about simply enjoying yourself. It is entertainment, after all, so why try to make it even more complex?

Because who likes simple? lol

Around Wed, I'll do a "re-wording" type of post.... a little more "worked over". lol

With the title, I was thinking that it used to be the actual Anime that would speak volumes, but today's "Current" trend is to let the "Marketing department" get behind a title and push it on people that might not like it.

Sort of down the lines of, let the show EARN it's popularity to drive the marketing, compared to the marketing MAKES a show popular.

Yeah, the words in my head sort of went everywhere, not really as "tightly organized" with one-on-one talks sometimes. lol

Did you read the earlier comment?

It's not about the Anime TITLES.... it's about the MINDSET.

"Old Guard" just watch the show, if you like it then good, if you don't like the show..... try another title.

"New Wave" just watch the show that I say you MUST WATCH AND ENJOY, no matter what YOUR tastes are.

That's the problem with people today, it's their MINDSET that's wrong because it doesn't put into account YOUR tastes. Go back, carefully re-read the entire blog. Did I once SAY "You MUST watch this Anime Title, and you MUST like it, because I say you MUST" ?

No I did not, I mentioned the titles I liked over the years, because I liked them. If you don't like them, then so be it. It's MY tastes (art, story, character, plot etc, etc, etc) that dictates what I want to watch, NOT what you TELL ME.

I think you missed the ENTIRE purpose of the post. I wasn't talking about diving into the depths of a single title. I was talking about how some people would let the show speak for itself. If you liked it, then bravo... if you didn't, oh well. Maybe next time you will.

Then there are some people that are basically saying that you must watch this title AND you must like it. Without regards to what YOU want to get out of if, or what YOUR tastes are.

It's that second group of people that I'm both upset about, and worried for. They come across as "Strong-arm" people that if you don't like their show's artwork, or their show's characters, or their show's storyline.... then the problem is that YOU don't have any tastes at all. It's almost like saying that you don't like what THEY watch automatically puts you into a position of having to defend yourself BECAUSE you don't like the show.

I've said this before to other people, and I'll say it again. I don't mind that you like Dragonball (for ANY REASON)... just DO NOT expect me to like it as much as you do.

And if I happen to dislike your shows, that doesn't mean I don't like the whole Anime material available, I just don't like that SINGLE title. Just like MY shows are enjoyed by ME, that doesn't mean that YOU have to like them either. I want us to both just be able to agree that we've both ENJOY anime, that we just have different tastes in the shows that we DO like. Some of those tastes will include the same titles (Trinity Blood and Slayers for example), but not every single title out there.

That's where the difference between "Old Guard" and "New Wave" is really at. It's the "New Wave" people, that have the mindset that you've given up YOUR tastes in Anime titles for THEIR tastes in Anime titles.

One last thing.... I'm proud of my heritage...
I love my culture, in fact, the Japanese love our culture too...
As pointed out with their fan craze over our bollywood superstar - "Rajnikanth"
And, for that I love the Japanese...

Here is all the evidence behind the fact that the Japanese love my culture as much as I love my culture:

I don't know why or how insulting me is helping your arguments.
Moreover, I don't see how calling my arguments weak is helping your arguments either.

Fact of the matter is... having contradictory feelings... is contradictory feelings. How can you be repulsed and attracted at the same time?
"That's not saying "they want Caucasian features", which is insulting and laughable as an argument."
Now who has the weak arguments? You don't explain anything here... you're just trying to shove a pointless argument about feeling repulsed and attracted at the same time.... who or what feels like that? Give me one good example of feeling repulsed and attracted at the same time? And, don't point to female feelings... cause thats just weak.

If you are drawing japanese characters with caucasian features and calling those characters purely japanese... thats just delusional.

Saying that manga characters, just cause they are made by japanese people are all japanese is also delusional. Thats like saying Snake eyes and Storm Shadow from G.I. Joe are caucasian just cause their creators are caucasian.
BTW, Snake eyes and Storm Shadow are japanese in G.I. Joe - they are not caucasian.

"every nation and society has influenced each other ever since the world was in existence. Native Americans introduced maize to the Europeans, for example."

EXACTLY MY POINT! Hello!
Matt Thorn says that caucasian's never dominated Japanese society.... hence he is trying to point out that there is NO influence from the caucasian side.

"Unfounded and poor as an argument, as other cultures have the same thing. The funny thing is, the Japanese have their own NAMES for these concepts, such as MANGA, which is their version of comics, ANIME, which is essentially Japanese animation or "cartoons"."

The argument isn't about other cultures... its about japanese manga and japanese animation. Unfounded and poor? How so? If its unfounded... then you are practically saying that animation and comic books were a japanese invention.

Just cause you give it a new name like "anime" and "manga" does not mean its your own invention.
At 9:49am on June 5, 2009, K6 said…
I have read your cut and paste of Matt Thorn and his arguments are weak too:

"Japanese may feel ambivalence about the West, as well as about their own "Asianness," but they also often display a strong streak of nationalism."

The first half of this sentence, agrees with my conclusion that japanese people have identity issues. Its like saying I'm 50-50 about my asianess... I'm proud to be asian 50% of the time, but I also wish I had caucasian features.

ALSO

"Japan, however, is not and never has been a European-dominated society, and the Japanese do not need to include stereotyped racial markers such as slanted eyes or straight, black hair. In Japan, a circle with two dots for eyes and a line for a mouth is Japanese."

This may be only partially true, because physically europeans may have not dominated the japanese. But they could have affected Japanese culture through European art.

Film, cartoons, animation, comic books... those are not Japanese inventions... through "adoption" and adapting with their own style... a lot of the caucasian features "could" have passed down as well.

Just Bad Cinema: Prom Night(Old)

You know when it is a bad indication that a slasher movie won't be up to par?

When there are just too many teens in the theatre.

Welcome to Prom Night, where Sylar cuts through a bunch of empty school stereotypes to go after Claire once again. Or not. Seriously, when the killer shows up at the hotel that hosts said prom, he is disguised in basically a regular set of clothes...and a baseball cap. It reminds me of Sylar in Season 1 of Heroes, when he was hunting Charlie or going after the "track… Continue

Top Five Retcons THAT SHOULD BE DONE!!

It's pointless. It's kind-of stupid if you think about it long enough. But sometimes...sometimes you just have to bite the bait and be reeled in. Back To The Comics: Dark Reign

A few months ago, Norman Osborn, the Green Goblin, became the new top cop of the Marvel Universe after performing a killshot on Skrull Queen Verenke, the big-bad of the last Marvel event Secret Invasion. Now, the fictional cosmos is secretly being ruled over by the "Cabal", a Anti-Illumuniti consisting of Norman, Emma Frost, The Hood, Doctor Doom, Loki, and Sub-Mariner; their dastardly rule is being enforced by H.A.M.M.E.R.(which stands for nothing, apparently), the organization that repl… Continue
