The Austin Spill Party 2009 is coming along nicely. I've already got a few things in the works. Now all I need is an idea about how many people will be there.

This group is made in response to the fact that the Westboro Baptist Church is going to picket Heath Ledger's funeral. Thanks to Predator for spreading the word about it. Rest in peace Heath Ledger.

A Note: I've constructed this review with those in mind who have neither seen the movie nor read the book. For those of you who have, feel free to skip down past the plot overview. This one's a bit longer, so I've decided to put headings to organi...

About Me:
Hey everyone,

I'm Vince. I'm a huge fan of mixed martial arts, and I currently practice Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai Kickboxing.

I'm really getting into comics now, but I'll pretty much give just about anything a read-through, good or bad (if bad, then simply because I want to be able to bash it effectively). Studies on cognitive neuroscience (my favorite, actually), political science and philosophy, or sittin' down with some good ol' fashioned comic books, it's all good.

I don't watch a lot of TV, I mostly just have my favorite shows on DVD and stick with that, mostly. Stuff like Dexter, Dead Like Me, Family Guy Seasons 1-3 (the good ones), and Robot Chicken.
All Time Favorite Movies:
Full Metal Jacket, Fight Club, Scarface, The Departed, Pan's Labyrinth, Sunshine, American Gangster, The Godfather, V for Vendetta, Serenity, Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon, Iron Man, Street Fighter Alpha and Alpha Generations (NOT the live-action film, the animated one), Lord of War, Eastern Promises, 3:10 to Yuma, Goodfellas, Nightwatch/Daywatch, Death at a Funeral, Clockwork Orange, The Protector, Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz, The Dark Knight, Tropic Thunder, Iron Giant, Fight Club, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Stranger Than Fiction, No Country for Old Men.
All Time Worst Movies:
Ghost Rider, Meet the Spartans, The Wicker Man (Nick Cage Version), Street Fighter, Batman and Robin, 2001: A Space Odyssey (I love Kubrick, but this is one of the most boring, pretentious movies I've ever had the displeasure of having my hopes smashed by).
Favorite Actors or Actresses:
Chiwetel Ejiofor, Javier Bardem, Jack Nicholson, Morgan Freeman, Robert Downey Jr., Peter Stormare, Steve Buscemi, Ed Norton, Cillian Murphy, Hillary Swank, Helena Bonham Carter, Tilda Swinton, Christian Bale.
Favorite Directors:
Guillermo Del Toro
The Coen Brothers
James McTeigue
Christopher Nolan

I'm sure there are more... I'm just blanking right now.

District 9 Review, Alternately Titled: "Humans Are Dicks; A Retrospective."

When I talk to people about movies that are considered legendary, films brought up include Citizen Kane, The Godfather, Alien, or Jaws. Seeing that most of said discussion group was born long after these movies were released (myself included), the gravity of just HOW MUCH these films changed the face of Hollywood forever is hard to communicate as emotionally and viscerally as experiencing such a change firsthand. I myself have only been able to truly grasp the significance of these creations fol… Continue

Because I Feel Like It Reviews: Preacher by Garth Ennis

It seems that one of the hardest things to do in any medium is write an effective story that deals with spirituality in today’s society without detracting from the quality of the narrative, or having it degrade into a pompous, holier-than-thou rant. Largely, any criticisms or ideas presented are usually cut-to-ribbons in the name of better sales numbers, and chucked out there intermittently with all the technique finesse of Kanye West circa post-Katrina, resulting in a watered down, thematically… Continue

Because I Feel Like It Comic Reviews: Rising Stars by J. Michael Stracsynski

It could be argued that one of the main reasons for the recent popularity surge of comics and superheros has been filmmakers’ abilities to effectively bring history’s most beloved superhero personalities into the real world. What is it like for a super-powered being to have to deal with the politics of prejudice and fear so present today, while making the tough choices of whether or not the mantle of responsibility of “protector” is their’s to wear? What are the psychological and personal and pu… Continue

Because I Feel Like It Reviews: Tropic Thunder (Director’s Cut)

Hey everyone! We’ve just gotten past Christmas and, I was lucky enough to get some of my favourite movies from 2008 in my haul this year. And now I have some time on my hands, so instead of just vegging out until school comes back around, I thought I’d dust off the old keyboard and critiquing vocab and share my thoughts on some of the luscious bounty I’ve accrued this year, starting with a movie which now ranks up there as one of my favourite comedic films: Tropic Thunder!

Just so you know, ins… Continue

Kimura's Trip Down Memory Lane: The Iron Giant

So it's official, the Iron Giant still gets me every time. Not once did I choke up, not twice, but THREE TIMES in this movie. It's actually been bugging me all day as to WHY these parts in particular had me reaching for the Kleenex and hugging my dog (yes, yes, raucous laughter, the MMA freak loves his puppy. SCREW YOU!!!). But the overall impression was that Iron Giant is still a timeless classic which has aged impeccably well, and will continue to.

For those of you who haven't seen this work… Continue

To answer your question in the League Lounge, the Angry Movie Dork is a member here that Serj and the guys have been ragging on for being a lying copycat the past few months. He's just a confused newbie that hasn't got the message that people don't like him.

I left comments in his discussion and on his page that he should just quit it before it gets worse.

Beast Wars was for me all about the 3D animation, I was well passed the age of transformers (like about 12-13) when it aired that I was aftar a more mature cartoon which I found in Teknoman, later Ninja Scroll and South Park.

Mainframe created many other excellent action based series that I found much more appealling Reboot and Shadow Raiders: Planets at War. the attention to details was at the time breath taking, the lip sync was dead on, the use of bumping mapping, normal mapping, reflections and partical effect were so well render that even if they have dated at time they stoled you on the setting.

If you like character develpoerment in 3D check out Shadow Raider it came after Beast Wars and it really shows that the company had learned from there mistake and short comings.

Due to other people's conversations I'm starting to come to the conclusion that Gordon was picking the 'lesser of two evils', and that's something that isn't easy and is a slippery slope. I would feel better if Batman did some things behind Gordon's back so that he would be able to say honestly that he had no idea how Batman came about getting the information he has.

Thanks man for all the comics you listed. I am fairly new to comics and graphic novels but I think I'll be getting Ultimate Spiderman (because thanks to the 90's and the recent movies I'm familiar with it the most) and Transmetropolita (heard it on a LEOG and it sounded great). I've read Miller's 300 once from a friend so whenever I get some more dough I'll definately check out The Dark Knight Returns. Thanks again for the suggestions!

As for the BJJ, I am still not currently taking it (not much money) but have somewhere around 6-7 months worth of experience. Yeah I know not much at all. I was with a Gracie school in Chattanooga but am attending school in Mississippi so no more GJJ for me. When I transfer I'll be taking Judo, which is gonna be frickin' sweet. I heard you mentioned on LEOG and was sitting there to myself "It's kimora...key-mur-ah dang it!".
