Death Note
I'm not one to discriminate in my Anime viewing, but honestly I seem to prefer light-hearted anime to the darker stuff. I would definitely put Death Note in the "darker stuff" category.
I think that Death Note is the rare series not intended to be deep entertainment, that just came out that way.

Hard for me to be 'elitist' when I only mentioned what I would want to see over other titles, but didn't even mention that YOU should see it. I made it clear that the titles I wanted to watch because they were better to me than other titles, but NOT that they would be the "only thing" that anyone should watch.
