Jesse man, I wholeheartedly agree with you there. It's true, there is no way that you can translate from one form to the screen without changing the dynamic.
My problem though is more on the matter of the games that are chosen, most of them are chosen on their popularity and not on their merit as a story. Just look at Doom. The story was shit, through and through. And the resident evil sequels, absolute undiluted diarrhea milkshakes. They really fail because most movies are made on the basis of successful films.
Resident Evil = Dawn of the Dead (original)
Resident Evil 3 = Pretty much any Jason movie mixed with Night of the Living Dead.
Halo = Starship Troopers mixed with any generic zombie movie.
I could keep going but I don't have 500 years.
The only reasonably acceptable video game movie is Mortal Kombat really.
I do have faith that a good video game can be made though, given time and good material. Personally if I could pick a video game series to made into a movie, I would go with the Legacy of Kain series. If you don't know what they are look them up and check out their plot, they actually got real writers to write the dialogue and my god it shows, the scenes are like a visual massage.
