First off, I would like to thank Carlyle a million times over for recommending Duncan Jones' rubix cube of a film, Moon. I don't think I've enjoyed a science fiction film this much since I saw Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey!
Indeed they are. For the longest time I always thought Summer of Youth was the longest movie ever clocking in at a whopping 6 hours. But then I found out about Burning of the Red Lotus Temple, a Chinese film with a mammoth 27 hour running time. Though I don't know if it would technically count since it was split up into 18 separate movies after they realized nobody would sit through a 27 hour movie.
It's not that they're too long, but I feel his content and subject matter could do well being tighter. Voices of Distant Star is the perfect length at only 1/2 an hour of a simple story about long-distance romance. And his shorter films before that were incredible. That's was my only real problem with The Place Promised in Our Early Days is that felt a tad padded out. But I'll most likely check out 5 Centimeters per Second since it sounds more condensed.
But I'm not afraid of long movies. I sat through the Godfather 2 and Dune.
The first Legally Blond was good, the second, not so much. Not very far in Anthropologist, so far not as interesting as I thought it would be. I saw Awakenings in high school I think, possibly in Psychology.
Heya, I'm doing good. Just been working and all that, I think my toaster isn't working right... because that's totally relevant.
I see that you have Awakenings under your favorites, Mark and some other friends haven't seen it. I've been reading "The Anthropologist from Mars" which is by the author of the book Awakenings.
Also, I'm watching Legally Blond 2 for the first time because it's on TV and so far really bad, so maybe I'll see if any of those are on the play now netflix.
I got nothing against giant robots; that was just for the blog. To be honest, most of my anime DVDs are mecha (Robotech, Gundam 0079, Patlabor, Nadesico, all of which I recommend). If I remember correctly, the four you mentioned are all by the same guy, right? I've seen Voices of a Distant Star and The Place Promised in Our Early Days. They're both really good, but after watching them both, I'd like the director to stick to more short, tighter pieces. Perhaps he could do a short story anthology movie.
Wanna hear audio commentary of some of our favorites or worse favorite films of all time, from a bunch of hacks, ugh...I mean Nerds? Then check out the group before the site is up!
