Profile Information

Hometown:
St. Louis
About Me:
Man how times have changed. I am now married. MARRIED!! What the blue fuck? 35, living with my asian stars and skies. Jesus, poetry? And bad poetry....oy vay.
All Time Favorite Movies:
Wow, hope this has enough space. Ok, Star Wars Originals, Princess Bride, Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Truman Show, Dark City, City of Lost Children, American Psycho, Donnie Darko, Ghostbusters, Die Hard series, Indiana Jones series, Lord of the Rings series, Akira, Nausicca of the Valley of the Winds, Ri-ki-oh, and so on. Look, I tend to like sci-fi, fantasy and anime...and it'd take way too damn long to mouth them all. So how about i just let you know if a movie pisses me off enough to skin the cast with potato peelers, eh?
All Time Worst Movies:
Roger Corman films, all of them. Romantic Comedies (we should make them against the law). Disney, period. Battlefield Earth. Catwoman. Gigli. Aragon. TV Stephen King movies/series. My BIGGEST pet peeve is movies based on other people's work that the director didn't bother to look at and just made up their own story. You hear me Joel? One dark day I will hunt your ass down, stick a shotgun like the Big Black Cock of Death down your throat and blow your brains down to Thailand!! Bang, baby.
Favorite Actors or Actresses:
Hugo Weaving, Harrison Ford, Kate Blancet,...and I forget the rest...ah well, they got paid.
I love this movie, and this riff KICKS ASS!

Sadly, I think you hit the nail on the head with Star Wars. There's so many "Fan-bashing" aspects and "Kids-movie" aspects, that it's so hard to make people realize how many movie-making advances were made in production OF the original trilogy.

Now, it's sort of torn between two groups. The first is those that love the movies (Fans) and those that just watched them to see a movie (non-fans). And as the years go by, the gap between the two will just get bigger and bigger. =/

I feel the same way about UNIT. They've gotten too many people that just show up and are gone right afterward. They MUST HAVE someone that can keep showing up as a recurring character for UNIT to be really effective. In a way, I sort of liked the black lady from Planet of Death. She reminded me of the Brig in a way, of being able to keep her head under pressure but never letting the "Threat" escape her attention. Plus, the way she was able to both get the scientist back on track after the danger was over was nice to see after pulling the gun on him to shut down the rift. That was the moment that she reminded me of "The Brig". No-nonsense yet flexible when needed.

As far as both Liz and Jo? Well, wasn't really a fan of them both. Yet, in a way I sort of agree that Jo was a bit to "Bubbleheaded" for me too.

"The Brig" will get his when I go over UNIT as a whole. It's sad in a way, but the only way to REALLY understand what makes "The Brig" so important is to understand what UNIT is, and what their mission really is, and how it has changed over the years.

Hartnell: Grouchy, fussy, sexist, elitist, snobby and stubborn

He really was more of fussy old fart sometimes wasn't he. He always struck me as that "Old school" grandfather that just had to be "right" even when he was wrong and couldn't adapt to new situations. Which is funny, because that's how my Grandfather really was like.

Troughton -- I like his free spirit, but sometimes it seemed a bit "distant" too. Which is sad because he really wasn't that way when you see him over time. It's something hard to talk about Troughton because of the "clown" part to the character. It's something that a lot of people either find endearing or don't really like.

Pertwee: -- Pertwee is possibly my 3rd fav. Behind Baker and Davidson. Personally, I loved that this was the first sign of a "hardnosed" doctor that was going to fight for what he believed in, sometimes even to the point of "Damn the cost, this is RIGHT" attitude from time to time.

Baker: -- THE ONE AND ONLY DOCTOR. By far, Baker's my personal favorite over all. And I love his "era" because of those wonderful characters (Romona and K-9 etc, etc) and I still think his stories were some of the best.

Davidson--- While I like Davidson's "Youthful Doctor", in a way I think that he's the one that really did have to put up with the most "Crap" behind the scenes. Different writers, different BBC bosses, Different "Social times"... but, for what he HAD to work with, he did a good job. And it seemed right that the actor played a "youthful" character because you sort of felt sorry that he seemed to be "over his head" in a lot of ways.

Colin:-- Still my least favorite, simply because of the way he was handled BY the BBC. Seriously, I don't think they ever really gave him a "Fair chance", and it showed in the series and the storylines he had to do.

McCoy -- I think that McCoy's run would be better if it wasn't for the fact that he came across as so manipulitive. Don't get me wrong, I DID like that they showed a more "darker/dangerous" side to the Doctor that hadn't been there before, but why did he have to be SO much that way? In this case, it's a "little bit goes a long way", and while I did like his "later" stuff over his "early" stuff, I think they went a little "overboard" to make the changes with the character more than the stories. But, I liked him more than I liked Colin for sure.

Mann:-- Really, this is a hard one for me to "overtly" bash. I LOVE that he kept the franchise going in PRINT. But when it came to "on screen" repensentation, I couldn't stand that damn movie. Mann's run was REALLY hurt by the movie, and he was another guy that never got a "Fair chance" on screen. However, when you start to talk "In Print" material, he really was well-handled. Just a shame the "in print" guys weren't the people that put together the "screen time". lol

Eccleston -- Yeah, he was wasted only doing ONE season. But he said repeatedly that he wanted to get the series on TV "up and going", and had only wanted to do one season all along. BUT, in a way that's also good because it DID allow us to explore new concepts of having a new Doctor, new Format, new Production, and the "passing on to the next regeneration" was going to be there no matter what else changes. Plus, in a way, it DOES work to his favor because it makes his one season so great. Especially how he reacts to the Dalek's return... BRILLIANTLY written.

Tennant-- Boy, I don't know. Granted, he's NOT my personal Favorite (Tom Baker will always be number one to me). I have to admit that I can see WHY Tennant's era has BEEN popular. Granted, a lot of that is Tennant himself doing a great job. But like you said, I think a lot of that has to do also with the stories he's had. I mean, come on... Blink was just AMAZING, and Rose's departure was so damn emotional. And then to turn around and get Donna in the TARDIS? How wonderful was that? But, Tennant's also had some really GOOD people all along, and they'll get to be more "upfront" with Russell T.Davis leaving. I have faith in Moffett, which puts us up to.....

The new guy --- really don't know about HIM at all. But, in a way I didn't know about Davison, he did good... Didn't know about Baker, and he was perfect, and didn't even really know about Tennant, and he did good too. But, for me (Or at least in my opinion) the new "kid" could be another great Doctor ONLY IF the production behind the scenes (writers, effects, producers...etc,etc) can keep up their works. I'm willing to hold off and give him a "chance" before I say anything. But, I have to admit I'm worried how his ability as an ACTOR will be enough to carry on the name "Doctor".

Now, personally....

I hope you will enjoy the next few blogs. They'll seem to be "all over the place", but in a way they will not. I'm currently working on "companion" only blog. And I got one lined up for Daleks, Cybermen, Master because those will always be the "top dogs" for villains. But UNIT may get their own blog, people INSIDE UNIT might get their own blog, even if mentioned in "companion" blog. It's going to be a good time down memory lane with a lot of things I want to put out there.=)

Hey congratulations! I've always wondered what an Indian love goddess wife would be like... I hope you have a great reception! Yeah I'd say a roundtable discussion group would be great; even though groups don't seem to last very long around here I'd be on for sure whenever I could be.

There aren't that many... how should I put this? Intellectually minded people lying around on Spill it's true. They tend to get drowned out in the forums by the memes and lolcats. I suppose it has a lot to do with age though. I mean, I liked some true crap when I was in my young teens. I still do, but not nearly as much and I wouldn't in my dreams try and defend them because I'm well aware of how terrible they are.

Who was part of the old guard? Every time I read that I had odd images of people in armour. But yeah, perhaps a group dedicated to discussing film, cinema and genre in a serious way would be great but that would only work if people were in fact interested in reading and discussing these topics. I dunno how many are. You've been around longer than me though so I suppose you'd have a better idea regarding that. But yeah, I'm with you on that completely.
