Grant Morrison has a habit of taking very obscure and random things from batman's past and using it for current storylines (case in point, many people didn't know Batman had a son, but Morrison brought him back for the current storyline). The trouble with RIP is that it's not a great starting point for new readers, however, everything past RIP should be easier to follow (Dick Grayson as Batman 'n such).
