Shame Review

“We’re not bad people. We just come from a bad place.”“Shame”, Steve McQueen’s stark and uncompromising exploration of the devastating effects of sex addiction, is a powerful glimpse into the dark parts of the human soul and how it can consume us. It stars Michael Fassbender as Brandon, viewed by his colleagues as a polite, well-kept business professional, who is secretly struggling with a sex addiction that causes him to seek out sexual release through either girls he meets at bars, escorts or…See More

Duke's Favorites From Film in 2011

So it is the last day of 2011, for some it might even already by 2012 (and by the time most read this it will be) and I decided to compile my lists of favorite films, performances, directors, etc. of the year. Please feel free to comment, good or bad, on any or all my picks but just remember they are MY picks.———-Worst Films:1) “Hall Pass” (dir. Bobby and Peter Farrelly)2) “Super” (dir. James Gunn)3) “The Change Up” (dir. David Dobkin)4) “Battle: Los Angeles” (dir. Jonathan Liebesman)5) “Crazy,…See More

A Separation Review

Elevated by a brilliant screenplay and some of the year’s best performances, the Iranian “A Separation” is a compelling and complex examination of cultural barriers, religious conflict, and responsibility all set within a simple domestic drama.     It focuses on a married couple, Nader (Payman Moadi) and Simin (Leila Hatami), who start the film off in front of a judge. Simin wants a divorce because Nader will not leave the country for Europe with her. She wants a better life for her daughter…See More

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Review

I've probably gone back and rewritten this review multiple times over the past few hours. I've been struggling to come to a final conclusion to how I felt about the film. On one hand it is a hollow crime thriller, all polish and no substance, and on the other it is an exceptionally crafted dark and mysterious tale of sex, corruption and murder that oozes with atmosphere. One could make the case for either, and many critics have argued in favor of one side or the other. After a lot of…See More

Reaction: The Dark Knight Rises Trailer

So the trailer for 'The Dark Knight Rises' has been released and it still leaves me with a lot of questions but luckily equal amounts of excitement. My reaction to the new footage:What we already know is that it takes place 8 years after the end of 'The Dark Knight', in which Harvey Dent died and Batman was on the run from the police. But what…See More

Reaction: The Dark Knight Rises Prologue

After spending a good hour the other day trying, because the server had crashed, I was able to get free passes to see an early screening of 'The Dark Knight Rises' prologue. It was a part of their new viral marketing campaign, and although it meant driving to an IMAX theater just to see 6-7 minutes of a film that doesn't come out until next year, I had planned to see 'Shame' in Boston as a reason to be out and already in the area. Sadly due to my crappy GPS and traffic I missed 'Shame' and…See More

Tyrannosaur Review

Very rarely does a film so bleak, so prone to trample over its characters until they might not come back up, manage to avoid the usual melodrama and clichés we have come to expect and instead stay an honest, unflinching and powerful glimpse of two individuals, one too hard and the other too soft for the world, just trying to make it through the day. Peter Mullan gives one of the year’s most destructive and powerful performances as Joseph, a widower who spends his time drinking, picking fights…See More

Hanna and Margin Call reviews.

“Hanna”, one of 2011’s most underrated films, is a visceral, energetic and smart thriller. One with a style, a sort of fantastical atmosphere, which saves it from the ordinary. It stars Saoirse Ronan as Hanna, a teenage girl who lives in the wild with her father, a former CIA agent who has been training Hanna to be a precise killer. His plan is to one day release her into the world on a mission to track down and kill a woman responsible for something in her past, the details of which are at…See More

Beginners Review

I honestly cannot think of another film I have seen this year that I found as charming and heartfelt as ‘Beginners’ which stars Ewan McGregor as Oliver, a middle aged man who has just lost his father Hal to lung cancer. Oliver reveals to us, through narration, that after the death of his mother a few years back his father came out, having been gay throughout the 40 plus years of his marriage. Oliver’s life following his father’s passing is a lonely one that often leads to…
