About Me:
I'm Derek Johnson, and I like Heavy Metal music, and really surreal movies. I'm not your average 17 year old boy, I like to think I'm actually quite intelligent, and not wowed enough by explosions and shiny colours to neglect true substance. Alot of my taste seems more geared to Gothic culture, Dark Comedy, Wicked Satire, stoner humour, dark and grim in nature, campiness (only to the point of parody though). But I can see the beauty in stuff that I don't even like. Overall, I can say I'm for the most part, an everyman.

My review of Public Enemies.

Been a while since I've posted any reviews, let alone any reviews that were actual films. Well, let me make it clear that the D-Man is back in business!

Anyway, for my glorious comeback into the world of movie reviews, I've chosen to review Public Enemies. The film is directed by Michael Mann, and stars Johnny Depp and Christian Bale. The film is about the criminal career of notorious bank robber and public enemy #1. John Dillinger (Depp) and the efforts of FBI agent Melvin Purvis (Bale) to bri… Continue

My Review of Into The Woods.

I saw another school production for my drama class for marks. This time, it was for the stage play "Into The Woods" based on the book by James Lapine. Original music and lyrics were done by Stephen Sondheim.

Into the Woods is a story broken down into two acts. The first act follows the standard stories of well-known fairy tale characters. It follows the story of Little Red Riding Hood trying to navigate her way through the woods to see her grandmother while avoiding the wolf. Cinderella making… Continue

My review of Aida

It’s been awhile since I posted a review up here. And this is a review of a stage play that I feel warrants a review.

Aida is a love story set in Ancient Egypt between an Egyptian Captain, and an Anubian princess taken prisoner in Egypt. While not a very original tale of forbidden love, it’s still a compelling story with two very compelling leads. Radames, the Egyptian Captain dedicated to his cause of leading his country to victory against Egypt’s enemy, Anubia. And the title character, Aida,… Continue

My review of Zack and Miri Make a Porno.

Kevin Smith's 2008 film Zack and Miri Make a Porno could potentially be a second universe within Kevin Smith's movies. We have Askewniverse made famous first by 1994's Clerks, and for the first time, Kevin Smith has made a film outside of that universe that's good enough to be able to actually start it's own saga. With Kevin Smith's trademark dirty jokes, conversations that have no point or go nowhere, and protagonists with not a hell of a lot of redeeming qualities to them, this film could pote… Continue

My review of American Psycho

After a string of negative reviews so far, I finally managed to watch a movie yesterday that deserves a positive review.

American Psycho, starring Christian Bale, directed by Mary Harron, based on the novel by Bret Easton Ellis is now on my top 10 list. Deliciously filled with the type of humour that would make a normal person puke their guts out, American Psycho is definitely something for the twisted movie-goers who find humour in even the most raunchy and disturbing subjects (such as myself)… Continue

Now for years comic book movies have been getting made, trashed, and applauded. Also, video games have been getting sh**ed on since they've been discovered by filmmakers. BUT, with the HUGE exception of Dragonball Evolution (it still hurts, folks),…
