Composer Conundrums - Die Hard

With the release to the fifth installment of the Die Hard film series, I thought it would be interesting to talk about the first film that started it all.I haven't seen Die Hard until I was in college.  After reading one of my favorite series, Full Metal Panic, the author admits that he really likes Die Hard and used it as an inspiration for Full Metal Panic.People praised the living crap out of this…See More

Composer Conundrums - The Last of the Mohicans

Before he was the 16th President, before he drank our milkshake, Daniel Day-Lewis was the last of the Mohican tribe.  Directed by Michael Mann, who was previously successful with TV shows like Miami Vice and would later gain more fame with Heat, The Last of the Mohicans was a commercial and critical success, praising certain aspects of the film, from the cinematography to the…See More

Composer Conundrums - The Patriot

After having big blockbuster success with films like Independence Day and Stargate, director Roland Emmerich attempted to make a more serious film that was not disastrous, in terms of genre.  A film about a South Carolina family fighting against British soldiers during the Revolutionary War, it was criticized for its script and its questionable historical accuracy. To add to the Americana sound, Emmerich…See More

Composer Conundrums - Antony and Cleopatra

Not to be confused with the movie, Cleopatra, starring Elizabeth Taylor, the film was directed and starred Charlton Heston in the lead role and was based on the Shakespeare play of the same name.It didn't have the huge budget that Cleopatra had, yet Heston managed to work everything out under his direction. All except for the score. The composer of choice was Spanish…See More

Composer Conundrums - Timeline

Based on the novel of the same name by Michael Crichton, the film was directed by Richard Donner which was set to be released 2002, but the studio had issues with the original cut and forced Donner to recut the movie until they were satisfied.Apparently, it wasn't enough to save itself from bombing at the box office and getting bashed by the critics. When filming was done and came time to have the score written,…See More

Composer Conundrums - Air Force One

What can you say about Air Force One?  It has Harrison Ford as the President of the United States and Gary Oldman as a terrorist leader.  What more could you ask for?Well, in terms of music, the producers wanted a score that would define the President in a sort of "Americana" way.  Therefore, they brought in Randy Newman, who was revered for having such a sound in films like The Natural…See More

Composer Conundrums - Chinatown

To tell you the truth, I never once saw Chinatown until I started my college days at Mission College.  I took film history class to broaden my perspective to films in general and get to see films I never saw or even considered watching.  One of the films that I saw in class was Chinatown.I like this film.  I think, to this day, is a well-directed, well-written, and well-acted movie…See More

Composer Conundrums - 2001: A Space Odyssey

Considered to be one of the greatest science-fiction films of all time, 2001: A Space Odyssey was quite the journey that was directed by Stanley Kubrick of A Clockwork Orange and The Shining fame, and co-wrote the script with science-fiction author, Arthur C. Clarke, based loosely on his novel, The Sentinel. The film was well-known for its villain, the HAL-9000, the visual…See More

Composer Conundrums - Aliens

The first Alien movie was a huge success, both critically and commercially.  The alien creature would become one of the most well-known alien designs in film history, it launched Sigourney Weaver's career into super stardom, and the idea of a sequel was not too far off.The sequel, entitled Aliens, was written and directed by James Cameron.…See More

Star Wars Episode VII Composer Choices

With Star Wars Episode VII coming soon to theaters, my thought is, “Who would be the composer for this film?”  Immediately, it should be John Williams. He’s familiar with the Star Wars universe and had composed some of the most memorable themes in film music…See More

Composer Conundrums - Alien

The late 1970s became filled with science-fiction films that started with the huge success of Star Wars.  Soon after, more films like Star Trek: The Motion Picture and to a certain extent, Superman: The Movie, would follow.  Another science-fiction film would follow as well, but within the realms of horror. That film is Alien.…See More

Composer Conundrums - Legend

In the past Composer Conundrums, we've seen composers being replaced after the other, mostly happening with Alan Silvestri.  There were instances where a composer would write from a minute to more than twenty minutes that had been recorded and had since been available in bootleg form. While we give Mr. Silvestri a bit of a break, we'll take a look at another veteran composer, Jerry…See More

Composer Conundrums - Judge Dredd

While we have Dredd blasting guys in 3D, back in 1995, a film simply titled Judge Dredd was released, starring Sylvester Stallone as the title character.  The movie was one of those movies that wasn't well-received, but has an audience that watches it primarily for the cheesiness of the entire thing.  Having Sly screaming "I AM THE LAW!!!" makes for fun entertainment, even if it is dumb. The film had a lot of problems behind the scenes, including the director fighting against the producers and…See More

Composer Conundrums - Pirates of the Caribbean franchise

One of the most well-known franchises, coming from an idea that sounded silly at the time, Pirates of the Caribbean benefits greatly by its location shots, the make-up effects, the visual effects, and the performances, most notably by Johnny Depp, in which the movie made him the blockbuster star he is today. But above all else, it's also well-known for…See More

Metal Gear Solid 4 review!

It received high scores for its story, gameplay, and graphics.  However, it comes down to the game being more of a movie than a game.  There's more to it, though.
