Mr. E said… Hmm, in the yards? That almost sounds like they're doing a re-fit on it. My whole first year in Long Beach they were literally gutting my ship, and upgrading all the systems on it, so when we finally got under way we had to do TONS of drills day and night to get the crew seaworthy. Is that they case with this one? If it is, don't sweat it to much. People will try to make it sound a lot harder than it really is. :-)
Ya, I probably had more Del Taco than I should have while it was there. :-) They did have a nice Gym on base to work it off though. That's one of the GREAT things about the Navy, is they always have really good facilities like Gyms and Theaters no matter which base I went to. Even my ship had a really nice Gym on it.
Mr. E said… Ah ha, so I was correct. :-)
Good luck on your ship, I'm sure you'll like it. Are they currently underway, or are they still in port?
Being a BM was interesting, but it was kind of a shock, as they don't really tell you what a BM is when you're joining. They just tell you your going to be a Seaman, and give a VERY vague description of what that is, and kept telling me it wouldn't take long to get into corpsman school, which unfortunately wasn't true. I was going in to get some kind of experience in the medical field, and then all of the sudden I'm thrown in with a bunch of guys who are in charge of taking care of the ship, steering it while on watch, and being at the heart of all the under-way operations, like re-fulling, so while I certainly got to experience things most people don't, it really wasn't what I had set out to do, and while I certainly don't have anything against people who are in it for the long haul, the Navy just wasn't were I wanted to be for the next 20 - 30 years. But like I said, it was a great experience, and I've gotten A LOT out of it.
Do they still have the Dell Taco on base in San Diego? They don't have those back here in the East. All we got back here is Taco Bell, and I miss those large burritos.. :-)

Mr. E said… Hey, Brit. I signed up to be a Navy Corpsman ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Navy_Hospital_Corpsman ) but after I had already passed all the requirements they told me the school was full and the only way I could get in would be to do a 2 Year Enlistment, and then enroll while I was in, so I was serving as a Boatswains mate ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boatswain%27s_Mate_%28United_States_Navy%29 ) with the intention of getting into the Corpsman school. I was one of the last people to have a Full Service 2YR enlistment, unless they re-instated it, because they stopped all 2YR enlistments about a year after I was in. It was kind of cool being a short timer compared to a lot of guys when I first got their though... :-)
Anyhow, I was only up to E3 when I got out. While I don't regret going in at all, it just wasn't the life for me, but I learned a LOT while in, and met a bunch of great people. After I got out I used the G.I. Bill to get my degree, and a V.A. Loan to buy my house with no money down, and still use the V.A. as my primary care giver instead of my work. So I gave the Navy 2 Years, and they've given me a lot as well. Don't regret a moment of it.
Glad to hear you like it so much. What's your rate? You look like you're in class in that photo. :-)
DesertPunk said… hey, hows it going? nice list of films.

Kizmania said… Hi Brit, this is a bit random I know, but I saw your picture on the side bar thing, and just really felt a need to inform you that your new hair looks great, and you have a pretty cool taste in movies as well. Reservoir Dogs is one of my favorites. Did you ever see Jackie Brown?
Anyways after reading your about me section you seem like a pretty cool person if you ever wanna talk about movies, or anything hit me up.
