I completely concur with your sentiments about Training Day.
I love horror but have grown considerably more picky about it these days. Did not care for the Saw series overall, but 1408 was lots of fun.
A suggestion, eh? If you like J-horror (and not the terrible American remakes, mind you), the original version of The Eye is fantastic. The original movie of The Hitcher is a classic, as well as The Amityville Horror, The Exorcist, and Jaws. I'm a fan of the Italian Giallo horror films and I have to recommend Suspiria and Deep Red by Italian master Dario Argento. There's an old ghost movie called The Changeling that's getting the remake treatment right now, so you can see the first one and be cooler than your friends. Of course, to me, the scariest film I ever saw after The Exorcist was Jacob's Ladder but I know some people who are completely unaffected by it (gorram robots).
