Elements in Video Games You Dislike

Gamers' answer to cliches you dislike in movies/TV--what are some elements you dislike in video games? I'm specifically asking about gameplay elements rather than story elements/characters in games, since those cliches also apply to movies and I don't think need to be repeated here. One gameplay element I dislike is the self-healing ability commonly found in contemporary FPS games. I miss the days when you had to try to hunt to find a medkit in order to heal your injuries after a fight. It made…See More

Your Comedy Crossover Ideas

You know how back in the fifties, after Universal had exhausted all of its monster movie franchises, and they started doing comedies where they crossed over their monsters with The Three Stooges or Abbot and Costello? What if they started doing that, today? What are your ideas? Here's a few: Harold and Kumaar Meet The Terminator Aliens Vs. Seth and McLovinSee More

Plot Holes and Other Headscratchers in Film

I thought we should have a thread specifically for discussing plot holes we might have noticed in movies, along with other things we might have questions about. This thread is just for fun, as some of the questions we have may not even have answers. Here's something I've wondered: in The Ring (if I understand correctly), after a person watches the tape, they get a phone call telling them that they're going to die in seven days. But suppose that person is stranded some place where they have a TV…See More

The Lifetime Orignal Title Game

Here's a new game I thought of: The poster before you will post the title of a popular movie of his/her choosing and then you should try to think of an alternate title for that film as if it were a Lifetime Original Movie. Afterward, you think of another movie and the next poster will try to think of an alternate LOM title. Example: Real Title: TitanicLOM Title: A Doomed Voyage or Love Sets Sail: The Rose Bukater Story For the uninitiated, Lifetime Original Movies are known for their overly…See More

Roger Ebert: TV is the Future

In a recent Newsweek article penned by Roger Ebert, he expresses his discontent with Hollywood's obsession with franchise films and remakes, and makes the case that TV is the future for scripted drama geared towards adult audiences. He even takes it further when he questions the relevance of the Academy Awards, which does not recognize made-for-TV movies and miniseries. What do you…See More

Revised MPAA Ratings (Part 2)

I recently watched the documentary This Film is Not Yet Rated, which deals with the MPAA's rating policies (specifically, the NC-17 rating). It really got me thinking that the whole film rating system should be completely revised. Because of the stigma attached to the NC-17 rating, most studios refuse to distribute/market movies that receive such a rating, and most theaters and retail outlets will not carry them, and the MPAA uses this stigma to its advantage as a way of getting the filmmakers…See More

About Me:
I'm a bit of an oddball. I like reading, writing, video games, cycling, Hawaiian shirts, hair metal, and movies. I'm very troubled by the creative stagnation that has been occuring throughout the entertainment industry (and consider myself a pop culture reactionary), as well as the exploitation of creative works by pirates and wannabes, and I fear that our society is spiralling into a new dark age where our culture will be resigned to YouTube and reality TV.
All Time Favorite Movies:
Star Wars original trilogy, Heat, Point Break, Superbad, Goodfellas, Alien, Aliens, The Dark Knight, first two Terminator films, Jurassic Park, Saving Private Ryan, Last Action Hero, 2 Girls 1 Cup, One Night in Paris
All Time Worst Movies:
Alien Vs. Predator movies, Uwe Boll films, Titanic, Resident Evil series, the new Star Wars trilogy, Gone with the Wind
Favorite Directors:
Spielberg, Cameron, Scott, Scorsese, del Toro, Tarantino, Rodriguez, Bay, Ed Wood

Pop Culture Reactionary

I only just realized how reactionary I am towards contemporary pop culture. I dislike most movies because so many of them are uninspired, derivitive and marketed towards the age 10-14 demographic. Most of the music I listen to is from the 60s, 70s, and 80s (though I like Foo Fighters). I used to watch TV from 7-10 p.m., Monday-Thurday, but now every time a good show gets cancelled and replaced with a shitty reality show I get on my computer rather than look for something else to watch. I read a… Continue

IT Remake-- Good or Bad?

As you Spillions must already know, It (based on the novel by Stephen King) is slated to get a remake. Unlike most remakes, I think this one has the potential to outdo the original, because the first adaptation was made on a shoestring budget, and had to be severely watered-down from its source material because it was a made-for-TV miniseries.

I know, some of you are going to say "The original was a classic. It scared the shit out of me as a kid. They shouldn't remake it." But… Continue

Wow, I never thought of the Sy-Fy and MTV comparison before. But now that the article points it out...... it's about as clear as day that is exactly what's going on. Plus, whoever put together those quotes from the founder and president really pointed out the fact that they just don't care at all about sci-fi in general.

I noticed you were having some difficulty embedding videos in your forum, let me try to help you out with that:

When starting or editing a discussion, you have to the choice of either using Rich Text, or HTML.

Rich Text is easier to write in, as you can see what you're doing and don't have to be an expert on coding, etc., but it doesn't allow for video embedding.

In order to embed a video in a forum body, you'll have to switch over to HTML.
Once you've done that, all you have to do is paste the embed code:

If you switch back to the Rich Text format, the video may not appear, but it's still there.
Likewise, switching from Rich Text to HTML after you've written something can be pretty messy looking.

You may have to play around to work out all the kinks, but hopefully that solved your problem.

Cool, another Spring based film fan. I almost never see them around where I am and it's a nice thing to see (being that most people around here are overly obsessed with music).

started reading andrew keens book 'the cult of the amateurs' since you said everyone should read it. i agree to some of it so far but i don't agree with his idolisation of the journalists and the whole newspaper thing at all (not in the UK anyway) the front pages are filled with vacuous celeb wankers spotted doing something naughty instead of what is really news worthy but i can see his way of thinking, will let you know more as i get further into it.

you're totally right man, I really do just want to make a novel for my enjoyment, I was just trying to see if it would appeal to other people, (the only reason I have that last bit is so that people will feel more eager to reply)
