If it's crap... We'll tell you

We get a lot of repeat questions here at LEOG. So here is the FAQ for me with the answers to some of our more asked questions. The FAQ is an evolving thing and will be subject to change and will grow as I add more answers to repeatedly asked questions. You might also check the FAQ on my profile for yet more questions/answers so you don't have to wait for my response just pointing you towards it.

1- What are your favorite comics/graphic novels/etc?

THE ANSWER:
I read a lot and for any given running comic there are periods I love and periods I don't. Here's a list of my typical answer to this taken from the FAQ on my own profile:
Kingdom Come, The Sandman, Hellblazer (mainly the Garth Ennis run), Preacher, Sin City: The Hard Goodbye and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, V for Vendetta, The Dark Knight Returns, The Killing Joke, Grim Jack, Ultimate Spider-Man, Fables, Watchmen, The Walking Dead, Cerebus, The Ultimates (volumes 1 and 2), Daredevil (Bendis and Miller runs), Miracleman (good luck finding it), Wolverine (Miller's 4 issue limited series), Rising Stars, Fray, The Authority, Planetary, Powers, Ronin, Batman: Year One, Astro City, The Invisibles, Doom Patrol, Invincible, The X-Men (Chris Claremont's original run), Marvels, Nextwave: Agents of H.A.T.E. , Green Lantern: Secret Origin, Captain America Omnibus Vol. 1 (The Ed Brubaker Death of Captain Am..., Locke And Key, Pride of Baghdad, Local, The Sword,

2-Why do you hate George Lucas/Tim Burton?

THE ANSWER:
George is a guy who much like Anakin Skywalker, lost his way to the dark side, in his case, toy sales. He honestly believes the only people who should give a crap about the Star Wars movies are little kids and screw everybody else. He's stated his position clearly on the matter, and now so have I. Frak him.

Tim has made some movies I really liked a lot (Beetlejuice, Ed Wood) some that were tolerable (Mars Attacks, Big Fish) but plenty I despised (The Corpse Bride, Planet of the Apes). I wish he didn't fall back so much on his 'style' which is no replacement for a good story. I'm just so BORED with him quite frankly. The worst offense is his pooh-poohing of comic fans and his "Look: I read ONE Batman comic, now let me make the movie" attitude towards his versions of the Bat-story. No, they are not terrible films. Yes, they are terrible adaptations of Batman.

3-Can I be on a LEOG?

THE ANSWER:
Maybe, possibly. We are NOT going to do a call in conversation the way Korey has done with ACOCO so just give up that dream. Part of why this works is it's a bunch of guys all drinking and having fun in the same place. We party before and after with good food, good drink and often other friends hanging out in the house with us. Trying to do the chemistry with a phone call just won't cut it and our answer is final. As far as YOU being one of the people to come join us...give us a chance to get to know you first. Come by the Nomad Bar sometime in Austin...we're often found there. Give us a chance to hang out with you over a few beers. Maybe we'll see that you'd fit right in. Except for Predator. He gets carte blanche if he ever comes to America. Hear that, Pred? You got a seat waiting.

4-Who do you think should be the villain in Batman 3/any Batman 3 question?

THE ANSWER
Just enjoy the gorram two Batman movies that are out already. I'll worry about the next film when it happens. Chris Nolan is a frakking genius and I'd rather he and his team of badasses make a decision based entirely on their own logic and creativity rather than what the studios hear the internet is favoring. Which is EXACTLY what happened with Spider-Man III and it's version of Venom which Sam Raimi never wanted to do in the first place but the studios forced him into because of you whiny biatches. That being said, the answer to "who will be the next villain in Spider-Man IV" is very similar to this one.

5-Who's your favorite superhero? Who's your favorite villain?

THE ANSWER
I've said it again and again and I'll say it again: Spider-Man. Maybe because he's not full of himself, maybe because he's a nerd and has normal human problems (even as an adult and married to a supermodel...like he was and should be again.) Maybe just because he uses humor as a shield and is always fighting assmuppets who are totally full of themselves and are incapable of taking a joke. But mainly because his powers and costume are the best out of any character out there.

WHO YA GOT?

My supervillain...harder to answer. It's hard NOT to go with The Joker. He's been so scrutinized and detailed that he's endlessly fascinating, even with as little as we ACTUALLY know about him. If I don't go with that boring, "everybodies answer" I'd have to break it down to a short list:
Bullseye: What a kick-ass Daredevil villain. The snarky smack-talking psychotic killer to Daredevil's ultra-serious do-gooder. It's like Spider-man and his foes in reverse.
Magneto: I know he changes allegiance every six months it seems like but he's so relentlessly awesome regardless. Good guy...bad guy...whatever. I just love how powerful and "moral" in his own way he is. Unflappable. Cool.
The Saint of all Killers: From the "Preacher" book. I know there was some vacillation between whether or not he was a villain, and I'm not sure how there is a question, really. He's Clint Eastwood from the Sergio Leone films if he was 10,000 times as pissed off, immortal and undead. So very cool.

6. What Television Shows do you watch?

I know this is 'uncool' or whatever, but I love TV just as much as movies. I'll go so far as to say that at this point in time, with Television having evolved to the point it has now, I PREFER TV. Some TV anyways. Here are the shows that Cyrus has loved the most, past and present:
M.A.S.H., All in the Family, The Muppet Show, The Carol Burnett Show, Star Trek (TNG, TOS), Babylon 5, The X-FIles, LOST, The Venture Brothers, Arrested Development, Doctor Who, Battlestar Galactica, Rescue Me, Moonlighting, Six Feet Under, Deadwood, Farscape. Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, Angel, Entourage, Law and Order, The Riches, Pushing Daisies, Wonderfalls, Dead Like Me, Breaking Bad, The Shield, Family Guy, The Simpsons, South Park, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Dexter, Extras, The Office, 30 Rock, Spectacular Spider-Man, 24, Scrubs, The Big Bang Theory, Seinfeld, Futurama, Bullshit!, The Daily Show, Coupling, Twin Peaks, Veronica Mars, The West Wing, Freaks and Geeks, Batman The Animated Series, Chuck, Drawn Together, The Drew Carey Show, and more I'm sure I'm forgetting.

Cyrus that was a great FAQ. !!!

You might want to add who your favorite, least favorite heroes villains are, people ask that a lot (I know it's like going, "What's your favorite air to breathe." but people ask it)

I thought you were going to mentioned you depised Batman and Planet of the Apes.... I thought the Corpse Bride had a decent story. I normally change the channel whenever I see Batman playing on cable. I shudder whenever I see Jim Carrey in Batman Forever.

Maybe I just like The Dark Knight too much? O_o Dunno..

Great FAQ, I have been trying to find some Sandman HCs since I have never read it but it comes highly recommended, but its pretty pricey. Maybe I can sell a kidney...

I’m a big Tim Burton fan. The only movie he mad I hate is “Planet of the Apes”, and I never did care much for “Pee-wee big Adventure” (even do it had few fun moments).
I rely, rely, like his Batman films. True, he made some changes, but making Joker the killer of Bruce’s parents didn’t bother me much (It actually put a nice twist to the plot of the first movie), and I love that he made Penguin a cross between Dr. Calligarii and Elephant-man type sideshow freak… I actually think it Improve the character, and made him as psychotic and dark villain as Joker or Two-Face.
I know there are some die hard comic book fans, who feel betray by changes Burton did, and I respect them, but I can’t help but point-out, that Nolan did as many changes from the original material, as Burton did (in his first movie) if not more.
Heck! I found his Batman/Bruce Wayne to be very in the spirit of the comic books… Still, I agree Nolan had a way much better Joker, Gordon and Dent.
Both Nolan and Burton had a interesting take on Batman. Burton try to made gothic world where a man dress up as a Bat would fit, and Nolan made a realistic Batman, which would fit in our world. To me, they both succeed, how ever I prefer Burton version, as it had much more charm.

Another Burtons adaptation people like to compare with a version, some other director made, is “Charlie and the Chocolate factory”. Maybe it different from my point of view, as, un-like people in America, I didn’t grow up on the old version, and I’ve seen it AFTER I saw Tim Burtons version, but I honestly prefer Burton version a lot more, and Once again I don’t mind much, changes he made from the book, and I like his Willie Wonka back, who actually was more like way I imagine him in the book (minus the goat beard).

And yes! Hands, down! I agree Tim Burton’s “Planet of the Apes” movie suck. The only moments I like a bit, is the diner scene, and the ending… It doesn’t Top the ending from the old movie, by all means, but I still find it as a nice twist… To bad, use in a poorly scripted movie.

I rely like Burtons latest films [“Corpse Bride” and “Sweeny Tood”] and I’m looking forward to see Burns “Alice in Wonderland”. To Me, the guy is still holding very well, even do I doubt it will top some of his older movies, from the pre-Ed Wood era…

Tim Burton is an excellent production designer and a horrible director, plain and simple. He has a good eye and no ear. No sense of story or moment, but a vivid visual imagination.

And BTW, Batman Returns was better than Batman.

Do you read the current DareDevil comic written by Brubaker.

I personal think it's on the same leval as Bendis' run.

I do read the Brubaker run of Daredevil and he's doing a bang-up job on it.

Cyrus, I know that you atleast liked Clerks and you at the most hate Clerks II but what do you feel about Kevin Smith's other works, comics and movies?

Reply to This

Mallrats: Loved it when it came out. A bit tempered by time and him continuing to do the 'lazier' humor in his films like this one.
Chasing Amy: No question his best film. A perfect mix of his sort of humor with smart dialogue and a tense emotional situation that had gone more or less unexplored by other cinema
Dogma: I admire what he was trying to do here but it was extremely disorganized and messy. Plus, he ripped off Neil Gaiman's "Good Omens" a bit TOO much for me not to fidget a bit.
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back: Good for a chuckle once or twice, but by no means a good film.
Jersey Girl: Didn't see it
Clerks II: Awful. Near offensive levels of unfunny
Zack and Miri Make a Porno: While this is an improvement over Clerks II, mainly because of the improv skills of the actors he stole from Judd Apatow, it still relies too much on gross-out humor that isn't that funny or clever.
