THE FAQ: Greg the Bass Player Edition
First, I want to thank Cyrus, Leon, Beau and Jason for giving me the honor to be a part of the LEOG. It is a true joy to hang, listen and learn from these guys. Second, I want to thank everyone for his or her comments, whether pro or con. I appreciate the input. I will gladly answer any music question anyone has to the best of my ability-bands, musicians, instruments, technique, the music business, resources, etc. Check out my profile. I am beefing it up with photos, music and information. I will try to have some general answers about my tastes and influences. I will also be more diligent with answering direct questions. There are few there now I have to catch up on.
The question I got from Death Metal Mike was about my gear. I will do a rundown on my profile. On the podcast I use my 1978 Fender Jazz with Bartolini active pick-ups and a 2TEK Bridge. I use DR Hi Beam strings-45-105. I use a Monster Bass cable and I play straight in the mixing board. Another thing is sound is more than gear. It is in the hands, how you attack the string and the note choices you make. You should sound like yourself no matter what gear you have.
The other question he asked concerned my influences and lesser-known bassists. My Top-10 bass influences, in no particular order are:
1. Marcus Miller
2. Jaco Pastorius
3. James Jamerson
4. Larry Graham
5. Paul McCartney
6. Fima Ephron
7. Stanley Clarke
8. Victor Wooten
9. Jerry Jemmott
10. Bootsy Collins
Other bassists I like to check out are Jason Garrison, Norwood Fisher, Muzz Skillings, Kim Clarke, Doug Wimbish, Tony Levin, Sting, Darryl Jones, Verdine White, Mark King, Nathan Watts & Anthony Jackson.
I will start to overhaul my profile this weekend so that you can use it as a resource. This is just the list of bass players. Don’t get me started on drummers, guitarists, upright bassists, piano players, saxophonists, trumpet players, composers, songwriters, bands, producers, gear, music theory and philosophy…..

Hi there. My name is Al aka Mysterio I love Love Love music/movies/comics/tv. Music is my first love. I play tenor sax, although it is on begginer level. I listen to a lot of James Brown/Led Zeppelin/Heart/Judas Priest/AcDc/Santana and Jazz.
What are your thoughts on altenative bands, In particular Fishbone/Living Color and No Doubt/RHCP. It seems to me with all the bands. They let the bass player be sort of a star. Where as in regular rock band. The bass is all ways the side kick. Could you imagine if the bass player was missing or could not play with the FB/LC/ND/RHCP. It totally change thier sound. They just can't be replaced easily. Although LC has changed bass players in the past.
Any bands you think I should check out based on what I have written?

Hey Greg, I was wondering if there are any songs that are so powerful that they have actually managed to give you goose bumps? For me its the last part of Guerilla Radio by Rage Against The Machine, when the singer starts screaming, "ALL HELL, CAN'T STOP US NOW!!!", and in Life is Beautiful by Sixx A.M. when the guitar solo ends, and the acoustic guitar plays during the chorus. I was just wondering what some of your most moving songs are.

One Tree Hill by U2. It's the song I want played at my funeral. The 1st time I heard Are You Experienced? by Jimi Hendrix. Strawberry Fields Forever by The Beatles. I also love certain music sounds. Cannonball Adderley's alto sound, when John and Paul sing together.
All of the above still give me chills.

I need your advice on something...rather to settle a musical debate I've been having with friends and co-workers alike.
When Michael Jackson passed away, it was a sad event. It was also a huge event. While talking to some co-workers, I brought up the topic of who else in our lifetime could equal and maybe surpass the shock and media attention in their deaths as Michael Jackson's. The only legitimate answer I could come up with was Paul McCartney. It should be known that I'm a HUGE McCartney fan. It should also be noted that I recieved the biggest back lash when I said that.
I tried to explain that McCartney himself is a living legend. McCartney has basically been working continuously. He was in the Beatles, he was in Wings, he's even been successful solo. He hasn't gotten into that much trouble (outside of that Marijuana charge in Tokyo and the whole divorce thing) but apart from that he's been pretty solid.
My co-workers dismissed the idea as they felt McCartney wasn't big enough as Michael Jackson. They felt that Jackson had a bigger world wide image. That he touched more people. And they felt all McCartney would be known for was "That guy in the Beatles" Some of my co-workers are from the Middle East and Africa. They say they know of Michael Jackson, but they don't know of McCartney (bullshit) Interestingly enough, those who did take my side on this matter were either older (I'm 26 but we've got some older people at my job) or those who are into music itself.
This was largely my fault in bringing this up so close to Jackson's death. People were too emotionally tied to Jackson (as well they should be) but I also brought up that it took his death for them to buy some of his music again. I've been buying McCartney's stuff for a while. But I'm curious, where do you stand on the issue? You have much more experience in this field so I was wondering what your thoughts were.

Michael Jackson was shocking because he was relatively young-50. McCartney is 67 years old. People take McCartney for granted because he has been around so long. McCartney lived a relatively stable private life-other than being a musical genius, he was just a married guy with kids while he was with Linda. Michael was an enigma-the Elvis of our generation-plus an alleged child molester.
In the end, it doesn't really matter. Michael Jackson was great, McCartney is great. We should just enjoy the music.
