If it's crap... We'll tell you

First, I want to thank Cyrus, Leon, Beau and Jason for giving me the honor to be a part of the LEOG. It is a true joy to hang, listen and learn from these guys. Second, I want to thank everyone for his or her comments, whether pro or con. I appreciate the input. I will gladly answer any music question anyone has to the best of my ability-bands, musicians, instruments, technique, the music business, resources, etc. Check out my profile. I am beefing it up with photos, music and information. I will try to have some general answers about my tastes and influences. I will also be more diligent with answering direct questions. There are few there now I have to catch up on.

The question I got from Death Metal Mike was about my gear. I will do a rundown on my profile. On the podcast I use my 1978 Fender Jazz with Bartolini active pick-ups and a 2TEK Bridge. I use DR Hi Beam strings-45-105. I use a Monster Bass cable and I play straight in the mixing board. Another thing is sound is more than gear. It is in the hands, how you attack the string and the note choices you make. You should sound like yourself no matter what gear you have.

The other question he asked concerned my influences and lesser-known bassists. My Top-10 bass influences, in no particular order are:

1. Marcus Miller
2. Jaco Pastorius
3. James Jamerson
4. Larry Graham
5. Paul McCartney
6. Fima Ephron
7. Stanley Clarke
8. Victor Wooten
9. Jerry Jemmott
10. Bootsy Collins

Other bassists I like to check out are Jason Garrison, Norwood Fisher, Muzz Skillings, Kim Clarke, Doug Wimbish, Tony Levin, Sting, Darryl Jones, Verdine White, Mark King, Nathan Watts & Anthony Jackson.

I will start to overhaul my profile this weekend so that you can use it as a resource. This is just the list of bass players. Don’t get me started on drummers, guitarists, upright bassists, piano players, saxophonists, trumpet players, composers, songwriters, bands, producers, gear, music theory and philosophy…..

(You see, as much as you guys live comics and movies, I live music!)

OMG...I love Paul McCartney. And since I'm dying to learn how to play an upright bass I have to ask...what bands would you recommend I listen to?

If you want to listen to upright players, I would start with Ron Carter. He is one of the most prolific bassist living. He has played with just about every major jazz artist. Check out his work with Miles Davis. Jimmy Garrison played with John Coltrane.

Ron Carter is the Shit!

I love your stuff on LEOG, it gives the show that touch of class! I love jazz which is SO hard to find in my neck of the woods...it's not too big in NH...would kill for a good jazz station.

This is probably a dumb question but which do you prefer, the five string or four string bass?

I like Peter Tork (of the Monkees)..he doesn't play bass as much as he use to with his blues band but when he does he rocks the house. I make beaded guitar straps for him. He's a super guy!

I actually played with a band (JIm Lampos Band) that toured the northeast. I lived in New York City for 8 years (1992-2000). I played in Concord and Glen. Also, all over Vermont and Maine.

I prefer 4-strings. Sometimes I tune my E string down to D. I don't own a 5-String bass and the guys I like mostly play 4-Strings. I respect guys how play 5 and 6 string basses. it's just not my bag. When I play six strings, I play guitar.

Hooray for Marcus Miller.

Marcus Miller is the man. His playing and composing are great. You should check out his new project with Stanley Clarke and Victor Wooten-SMV.

I play bass too, and one of my favorite bass players happens to be lemmy from motorhead. My question is have you ever listened to motorhead and if so what are your thoughts on lemmy?

Reply to This

I am familiar with Lemmy and Motorhead. I use to watch their videos on MTV's Headbanger's Ball. I respect them but I don't listen to a lot of metal. I do like Metallica (Cliff Burton, Jason Newsted and Robert Trujillo).

Your background music fits perfectly with the show and your timing with Cyrus, Leon, Beau and Jason comments are perfect.

I just wanted to say that I've noticed the little moments during LEOG when you play themes, like Star Wars and others that I can't remember at the moment. I never know if the guys notice when you do these things, but it just makes me so happy for an undetermined amount of time.
And screw what everyone else says, I love you being on the show. It brings so much to it that when you weren't there for LEOG 11, I was sad and it felt a little off without you... Not to mention that I'm a huge fan of jazz and am a musician myself.
So, go you!

Just as bad as you think it would be. This instantaneous straight to DVD movie is full of no name actors, bad acting, and an obvious plot for revenge in which Ray Park's(Darth Maul, Snake Eyes) character sets in motion by killing someones fiance o...
