Is Airbender Cast Racist?
A quote in a scifi.com article.
"I'm not really pleased. First off, I'm not mad about any particular castmember's race, but a major theme of Avatar was tolerance of difference[s]. I think selecting an all-white cast does not hold true to this, or maybe my reaction does not (devil's advocate). Also, it seems that in the case of selecting established actors, in regards to Katara and Zuko, in my opinion hurt the film. A brand new world is getting ready to be explored, [and] having an existing impression of an actor pulls you out of the escapism and [makes] it less believable. Lastly, I feel that if Jesse McCartney was cast as Zuko, that it would be done strictly for mainstream crossover reasons. I think the same is true for Sokka."

Lol. The one fellow probably should have chosen a different culture than "British" (or Brits of a specific time period) because there's a whole lot of different peoples living in Britain. Still, he made a good point (is so assume this is a guy commentor by the way). I mean, if Harry Potter had been cast as a black character, I'm sure there would have been plenty of complaints. Heck, people complained about Aaliyah being Akasha in the very bad Queen of the Damned movie, despite the fact that the chick was a statue which is the only reason she was white....(Egypt is in Africa!).
Yet some how people still expect Asians to just "get over it". Maybe the lighter skin just makes these people complacent. It's close enough, right?
For me, this perfect world scenario that everyone wants to bring up is really annoying. The actors should be judged on their talent alone because that's what counts? Well, that's just not possible. We claim that these actors are getting the roles for their talents alone, yet somehow it's all too conviently simple to choose white actors. I mean...Asians couldn't at least get one out of four?
*sigh*
But I'm just thinking and babbling. Continue keeping the people informed, Rokrok.
