Ok, so last night on Gameswipe or whatever the fuck it’s called now Charlie Brooker tackled the whole videogame violence issue. Now right here, I’ll say that I don’t believe any of that crap. I don’t believe that playing violent games will turn you into a killer, or rapist or any of that.
In my time I have played and loved games like Mortal Kombat. Thrill Kill. GTA IV and Kane and Lynch to name a few. Now I used those games as examples because they all had the disapproving finger of corruption pointed at them by an uniformed government and pass the buck on parents.
Mortal Kombat was censored for the SNES cause of parent pressure. Thrill Kill was outright banned in the UK. Kane and Lynch was slammed casue both characters were viewed as unsympathetic thugs, especially Lynch’s “blackouts” where he would pretty much slaughter all those innocent around him. And we all know the controversial shit storm the GTA franchise has gotten over the years.
Are these games violent? Yes. Are they meant for adults? Yes. But those answers are cliché to me. When we look at young adults and how they react to violent games. It is all about nature vs. nurture. I really do think you need to be wired, have a certain temperament to yourself if you want to “act” upon what is nothing more than animated violence. These people are few and far between, yet the media as you saw on the show are determined to weed out every and all “unsafe” games for nothing more noble than a few more 0’s to the TV ratings, hits to the site. Or a few more papers shifted. They might be right to be concerned by the fact that games, are getting more realistic there by as is the violence. But they don’t have the right to target or “prep” before hand younger gamers who might not quite understand the story fully, cause I’m telling you right now. Each and every one of those kids were prepped before the camera’s rolled.
Now as you can tell by my earlier comment, I think when it comes to the kids. It all lies in the parents. The buck has to stop and start at home. It’s all very easy to blame outside sources (nature). But the end game is that it does lay at home (nurture).
The government make me smile when they weight in with their two cent. Nine times out of ten they are acting upon word of mouth and I’d be surprised if they even saw a live demo of any of these games.
So to sum up, I’d say that cause of the interaction accept of the violence. Videogames are viewed as cannon fodder.
To close though I have included the full eight minutes of that fan FEAR 2 video that Brooker clipped last night. It’s an interesting and somewhat bleak video of what can happen (I think) when nature takes over. Also if you can, listen to the background game effects. Voice acting etc. This game gives itself a chubby with all the over the top action. And I think Rab is it? May have been right about these games looking the same.
yeah i totaly agree with you Guy, Ive been playing Video games since the early 90s and Ive turned out ok (I think) if you ask me, it all comes down to the parents and how the child is brought up, i used to work in a video shop and the day after San Andreas came out, a child something like between 5-8 came up with the game and I told him I couldn't rent him it due to age restrictions, he goes crying to his mother and she comes up and rents it, I say to her that It may not be suitable (hell its not, but thats the way i had to say it) with all the violence and swearing, but she still rents it out, I was lost for words.
Well dude if you have noticed recently (like I have) is that some parent's have no idea about video games these day's. Like just last Christmas I have actually seen many parent's picking up a copy of either Mass Effect, Halo 3 or GTA 4 for their little kid. A good friend of mine from my high school work's at the EB games at my local mall & you wouldn't believe how many stupid customer's he has told me about that he has to help every day of the week. Just to prove that parent's don't know anything about games, the other day when I was at EB games visting my buddy while picking up a Wii game (Beatles Rock Band) a lady in her mid thirties comes walking in & she ask's if EB games sell's Ipod nano's?......WTF! Does it look like EB games sell's ipod's you dumb broad! try either The Source or better yet leave the mall & go to Costco Wholesale where they have a shitload of ipod's to choose from! Eb Games is a video game store! not a Apple store!
I totally aggree with you.
My Mom had an amazing trick she used to use.If she felt that a tv program was too inneroperate for me,she would take the tv remote, and change the friggin channel. *gasp!*
And here' another trick she used. When she read that a video game was rated M for mature, she wouldn't let me buy it! *OMG*
That's all part of a little technich called rsing your children.
Now I know, that's kinda old school, what with most people letting the television and the internet raise the kids now a days, but it worked.
Wow damn that's alot of blood & of course the Sniper rifle is a good weapon for cry'n out loud..due to the fact you snipe people down from a distance, hence Sniper RIfle. I now I have talked about video game violence before (Check out my Mortal Kombat group right here on Spill.com) but parents, critics & politics need to stop blaming video games for everyday wholesome violence. You know violence has not been just on movies & video games, but it's been all around us since the beginning of time, there should be no excuse for blaming us kid's/young adults for violence in video games, music, movies etc. From what I have been taught is that whatever you see on the t.v. or on the movie screen does not meen you have to reanact it in real life. So Jack Thompson, Hillary Clinton, Fox News, Paranoid parents, ESRB or any upcoming entertainment basher.....Go fuck yourself & burn in the deepest, darkest, hottest pit of Hell!
This group is for those who read the comics and loved the cartoon.Which by the way in my opinion are kinda underrated but that's just me.So tell me what you think.
I've noticed some people who seriously want to contribute into making a Spill movie, or at least a Spill fan film. This group is to discuss things like writing, production, etc... You guys have a crack at it, I'll just moderate. Have Fun!
