Traveling AROUND Austin Questions
Hey Austinites and Previous Goers of SpillDotCon,
I'm going to be flying into Austin most likely around June 14th. I really want to take some time to soak in the city while having fun with the Spilldos, and this includes going to the Pinballz and Austin Karaoke Pre-Parties.
Now, I really appreciate what Nate's done listing out various areas to eat, chill, and go to for Spill Events on a map, but I didn't take into consideration how far everything is separated. Even flying to Austin through the Airport, the Airport is a good 10 miles away from the general SpillDotCon area, and I'll be expected to pay a pretty penny to get a taxi. But what about simply going from venue to venue? Even Pinballs and Austin Karaoke are about 2 miles apart and both of those are REALLY far away from the 6th Street Area and Alamo Drafthouse. It feels like if I were only to only take Taxis, that'd take away so much money.
So my question is, will I need to potentially get a rent-a-car? How does everyone else generally travel around Austin? Do you guys get rides from other Spilldos, take the Metro or Buses? Or is walking not so bad? Granted, I'm a little concerned because I'm overweight and getting around would delay some of the activities, but I'm really curious over what's the best way to get around and/or the cheapest.

The #10 bus goes back and forth from there. Takes about 30min and costs $1. http://www.capmetro.org/planner/?loc1=MARCHESA%20HALL&loc2=CLUB...
Taxis work as well.

I suggest renting a car, I did last year and am doing so this year. It's a bit costly, sure, but you pay for the freedom to go ANYWHERE at any time. Nothing is simpler. BUT barring that, what everyone is saying is true, I'm down for shuttling a couple peeps to/from a location or two.

Just want to give some major props to everyone who helped me out in this thread. Especially Grant, who told me about the CapMetro website. I'll be relying on the buses for a lot of Thursday, but I have a good chunk of it planned out, and the buses to take.
I'll be eating at HopDoddy's at NOON, hoping to meet with some people. From then, I might go from the Violet Crown to see Moonrise Kingdom, but we'll see what happens because I might just chill with you all. After that, I'll check into my hotel.
The bus route from the airport to Hopdoddy's is on the #100 Bus to Congress and Riverside. You then have to go South for about half a mile, but I can probably see HpD's from there. If I go to the Violet Crown straight afterwards, it's the 1L Bus on Congress and The Circle to 101 Congress and 2nd, and you go East. After that, if anyone is staying at the Marchesa Holiday Inn, you take the #10 Bus to the Highland Mall and that's what I will do until Pinballz.
Look for a big dude with glasses, a beard, and a blue hawaiian shirt. Can't wait to meet some of you there!
