PresidentEvil posted a statusI will not lie: I am a sucker for romantic comedy anime, Heck, I even reviewed a romantic comedy for V-Day. So I can say, proudly I like that genre. One of my personal favorites is Please Teacher!, an anime with a ton of heart and great characters. It has been many years since then, but now, from the creators of PT, here is a new anime with different, but big expectations. I will now be reviewing Ano Natsu de Matteru or Waiting in the Summer.
This new story stars Kaito Kirishima, a first year high school student that loves video filming. As he is filming a movie with his friends, he meets a new student named Ichika Takatsuki, who joins them in filming. After some strange circumstances, he discovers that Ichika is an alien that accidentally fatally hurt him when she landed her spaceship on earth and saved his life. He agrees to let her stay with him to keep and eye on his condition while learning about earth and helping film their movie. Obviously, things become a little complicated when emotions come into play. The story goes in very good ways, has well developed characters and makes them interesting in many ways. The ending will split some, but I implore you to go to the VERY END before coming to a conclusion. For me, the ending was bittersweet, but won me back in the last few seconds. In short, this story is just as well told as Please Teacher!
The animation in this is STUNNING. It looks ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS!!!!!! All of the characters are voiced well too, but I don't who they're voiced by, so I cannot give them credit. The characters are well developed and each have their own problems and conclusions that can satisfy. The chemistry between Ichika and Kaito is very convincing and fun to watch. The music hits all the right tones at the right times, which makes it great to hear. This will seem familiar to anyone who has seen Please Teacher!, but that is not to it's detriment. It works.
All in all, I had a really great time watching this, really ranks up in the Romantic comedy spectrum. Really developed characters, a touching story, great animation and soundtrack, and great writing behind this, this is how romance should work. Please Teacher! really made the romance genre practically famous and I can proudly say this can stand right next to it. I can hardly find a problem in this, so If you are looking for a good romance, then here it is. The end may divide, but if you go through it fully, you will get some clarity.
Waiting in the Summer(Japanese Subbed): HALL OF FAME!!!!!!!

Permalink Reply by Donwun on March 27, 2012 at 6:02pm Hey man I am also a big sucker for romantic comedies / romance in general…in fact Josei is my favourite type of anime. I find anime from a females perspective to be somewot intriguing as the way a ladys mind works still fascinates and entertains me lol….well in particular in Josei they explore them more maturely and believably. Paradise Kiss is one of my personal favourites as an example of this
Anyhow I liked your V-day review and I also like this one…you’ve got my hopes up that this could set things to a high standard…adding this to my MAL list right now.
I’m also going to talk about a few of my other romantic favourites in an upcoming Podcast
Good stuff…keep it coming

I recently watched 'Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai' or 'We Still Don't Know the Name of the Flower We Saw That Day.' I would love to hear your opinion on it.
Permalink Reply by Animeniac on March 28, 2012 at 2:07pm Hmm...i really like rom-coms too but after reading a few reviews alot of people are calling this just a simple remake of Please Teacher and after reading the synopsis it seems like one
You also gave it a Hall of Fame and not even a first class...i dunno i am a bit weary but i think ill give it a try
Good Review
Permalink Reply by Tron on March 28, 2012 at 2:26pm It is totally understandable that this seems like a remake of Please Teacher, but that is not why I like it. Please Teacher worked so well due to its characters and actually finding a way to tackle real life relationship issues. This is more about having a fictional way of telling that love has its risks. Still, it drew me in due to it's characters. I would've normally given it a First Class, but I had so much fun with it, I felt Hall of Fame emphasized hwo much fun I had.
