BeasKnees1000 posted a statusAgain, this is something I have been thinking about for the last few months and needed to vent out there. This might turn into a rant midway but I will say none of the following is directed at anyone at Planet Tyro.
Okay, possibly the biggest and mostly tired argument of anime out there is whether debating on an anime that of the original Japanese version of an anime versus an English dub of the same one. Now, personally, I prefer my anime to be dubbed but I’m not opposed to watch it in sub. As a matter of fact, sometimes I’ll watch an anime that might never be dubbed or isn’t dubbed now. For example, I watched Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt before the FUNimation dub came to existence and thought it was an okay show (that you shouldn’t show to a newcomer of anime) despite what everybody else thought of that and I have to keep up on what they were saying. When the dub came out earlier this month, my opinion of the dub is…….it was like any decent dub you see out there and yes, it didn’t feel any different from the original language version but it isn’t always supposed to be the same, right? But yeah, I did like the dub of PSG not just because of me understanding it better or it features two recent favorite FUNimation voice actresses I like (Jamie Marchi & Monica Rial) but it never stray far from what it is.
Another subbed anime I recently watched was Kids on The Slope and I have explained on the PT chatbox, which is now buried under the other comments, on why I love this show so much and this is what should be dubbed nowadays (which it will, but I have ye of little faith @ Sentai Filmworks and their dub director Stephen Foster – look him up) and frankly that might the reason why because the anime that US distributors picked are mostly either the ones with the most ridiculous ideas and the silly premise. Ex: Cat Planet Cuties.
Then again, I have only seen 2 episodes of CPC (originally titled Asobi ni Iku yo!) on YouTube so I can’t judge the anime as a whole but so far, it’s something to please the ones with a cat girl fetish…not that there’s anything wrong with that. Most people that are non-anime fans look at that as why did I get into this again?
Now, on dub haters, I have heard that they think every dub is inferior to the original Japanese, even the ones that people describe as being better than the sub. Yes, there has been bad anime dubs from the 80s’, 90s’, even in the present day and maybe in the future but really, all of them? Okay, I get personal preference but I bet none of them would say that if they watched the original Japanese version of an anime……..with no subtitles!!!! No, really, I dare somebody to watch a Japanese dub of an anime with no subtitles and see how smug they are the next time around. But I’m not harping on subtitles since I use them myself, even on English dubbed anime and regular movies.
But recently what I really hate about dub haters is the comments I read during the English-dubbed trailer of Puella Magi Madoka Magica. Most of them are bashing the dub mostly based on that clip, thinking that the whole thing is going to be bad without even watching an episode of the dub format. You just can’t judge a dub anime without even giving it a chance.
Now I will eventually watch the show in dub format and will tell you about it after I’m done with it (but not as a review format) and I can tell you this, I wouldn’t be quick to judge the voice actors of this, mainly because I think most of them are newbies, just getting into the voice acting game, as far as I know. But, seriously, if you watched the dub of that and last the whole series, then you can tell me if the dub was good or not.
Well, that’s all I got to say about this.
Also, this video by GiggukAZ should help my opinion about this. Plus, it's my favorite video of his.
So, what do you think of this discussion here? Let me know about your interpretation about this.

They should just shut up, swallow their stupidity and give the dubs a chance. But I'm afraid that will never happen for a long time, they will be more dubs haters around and we can't do nothing to stop them.

ALSO: Now that I put the Cat Planet Cuties clip on there, now I have a desire to watch it......for some other personal purposes.

Permalink Reply by Tron on July 24, 2012 at 3:05pm Believe me, calling it weird doesn't do it justice. I am watching it to review, and I am kind of creeped out, I feel bad for some reason, lol.

Personally I give the edge to dubs, but there are plenty of subs I've enjoyed. Some I think are better than their dubbed versions, and others don't have dubs and don't really need them for that matter. But still, if they went ahead and dubbed them, I'm not gonna hate. Why all the hate? Just chill.
As for that Madoka Magika trailer, it's really smart how they make it out to look all cute and innocent, but surely someone is gonna watch it and think "Hey, this looks like something my daughter would like" and then go out and actually buy it for her. Fast-forward a couple of weeks and there will be nothing but dead cats littering the streets...
