Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt(Oct 1, 2010 – Dec 25, 2010)
Director: Hiroyuki Imaishi Music: Taku Takahashi
Comedy, Ecchi, Action,
Key Words: Parody, Gore, Crude Humor, Nudity,
Studio: Gainax Licensed American Publisher: Funimation
Episodes: 13 +1 Special
Panty and Stocking Anarchy are two angels who were kicked out of heaven due to bad behavior. They land in Daten City who is on the border between heaven and hell and is pleged by evil spirits all the time. Under the eye of Reverend Garterbelt, they collect Heaven Coins to buy their way into heaven again.
My Thoughts: Well, this is sort of interesting. Pretty discusting but interesting none the less. If you want a little taste of this show, the first episode is about people getting sucked down tolets and having to fight a large poo monster. It’s that random dirty humor.
The characters are odd. The strange dog type thing looks like a rip off of Gir in both how he looks and acts. Panty is always having sex and Stocking is always eating sugar. Both are reather shallow and don’t really care about Brief, there once in a while Geek boy side kick who sometimes shows up. They even run on the stereotype that Reverends are into little boys. The strange thing is, no matter how shallow all these characters are, it seems to work well in this show. The show itself is pretty shallow so it doesn’t give you false hope for the show.
This show really is heavy on parodies as well as the strange characters. It becomes a game of figure out where the parody is from and I had to laugh.
The artwork reminds me of Powerpuff Girls (The American Version) in how the lines are but yet, the characters never keep there shape. They are pretty angular and I never really see any character who is rounded. The only time that it rounds anything is when the character moves around. In fact, everything doesn’t have an actual keep its shape and the only time that it looks like normal anime is when they do the strip tease transformations. The only time they look at least close to normal is there transformation and even then, they are pretty much poll dancing.
I love the English voices. Again, this seems to be like Hetalia in that both Japanese and English are good though English is a lot easier to get the joke most of the time. The opening is nothing special but I actually like the ending in the American version. It’s something I would listen to a lot. I also think there transforming song is also one I would listen to. The voices are pretty good and I have to say, hearing Vic Mignogna as the boogie ghost Oscar H. Genius is pretty funny.
By the way, the ending pretty much throws the whole show into a 180 and actually has a really awesome story at the end. Warning, watch all the way to the end of the last episode and after the credits, there is something special that you may miss if you don’t! It hints of a new season to come but you have to see how they did this!

Permalink Reply by MAK2.0 (The Hybrid) on July 31, 2012 at 10:50am Y'know, once I watched the dub when it came out, my enjoyment out of it have gotten to be higher than before. It's still not appropriate for young kids or any non-anime watcher but I still enjoy it. Plus, I love hearing the voices of Jamie Marchi and Monica Rial as the main two characters, especially Monica.
Permalink Reply by Angel Otaku on July 31, 2012 at 5:21pm If you like hearing Monica Rial acting like that, I think you would like the English dub of Ghosts Stories too. If I remember right, she does the main character to it.
Permalink Reply by Donwun on August 1, 2012 at 9:58pm Well i recently tried the dub to see if my feelings would change on this and...no not really...its just too all over the place for me and i usually like this kinda thing...i mean, i liked Dead Leaves..but i guess P&S was much zanier than that tbh.
On a related note...ill be reviewing something soon that may be even zainer than this from what i've seen so far...lets see if that maches up....
Permalink Reply by Angel Otaku on August 6, 2012 at 3:13pm I haven't seen dead leaves but I will at some point. I'm not sure if I will like that one, what I hear is that its a little worse. I won't know till I try it though.

Permalink Reply by Angel Otaku on August 6, 2012 at 3:12pm I really liked the music too for the most part. There were one or two I didn't care for but this one was my favorite.
Permalink Reply by Chaos Jumper on August 9, 2012 at 4:33pm Funimation is best known for it's quality. Even when it was in it's early days with Yu Yu Hakusho, you can still say the mains were as amazing (if not more) than most modern dubs. THAT SAID, the dub was the only thing that kept me interested in the show. "It's like "HEY, let's parody America like America does us...except we have no fuckin' clue what we're doing". It wants to parody/homage the kid monster-of-the-week shows, but it just goes off to having unnecessary innuendo and just going out of it's way to make the characters unlikable. It would have been interesting for an animation crazy studio like Ginax to have a crazy homage to American animation (Kind of a subdivision of FLCL), but this just felt all over the place.
Permalink Reply by Angel Otaku on August 9, 2012 at 9:57pm I actually liked the story line too, and the ending caught me as a surprise.
