Comment by Frizzlestick on Monday I support any project involving the Hound.
Still haven't seen Iceman, but based on the trailer and from what I'm reading here, it'll go on up to the top of my list.
The general press has been so blah this short into summer. I've already vented my feelings on how utterly they failed to even give Luhrmann a chance, deciding before the movie even released to take him to task for their grievance that they're not allowed to enjoy Moulin Rogue or his previous work because the internet said so. I don't know how to explain it anymore. Is the cynicism that feeds the internet in the days of reddit finally hitting a breaking point?
Oh... and yes, that finale killed it for me. Wow, there was almost zero "story" in Name of the Doctor, but the character work was something. The scene with the Doctor and River had me tearing up. I hope we see Kingston again, as I always love cameos from River, but that felt like the right time to bid Professor River Song farewell.
Moffat typically has a problem with providing a good villain and that doesn't change here. Richard Grant just manages to take what little there was and make it work. I feel the biggest failing in what the Great Intelligence was trying to accomplish is that to do something that extreme would require a hatred few bad-guys harbor for the Doctor. He should've been a secret threat in every episode, working behind the Doctor's back to cause him to fail. Lacking that really sells short the severity of his overall plan.
That being said, I still did enjoy it. Madame Vastra, Jenny, and (especially) Strax continue to be some of the most fun side-characters in the Doctor's life. Considering how much they've helped in the dark times following the loss of the Ponds, I was pleased to see the Doctor willing to finally pay them back for all the time they were there when he needed them.
But that final shot... oh god that final shot. Marvelous, simply marvelous. That is a haunting shot of the "Doctor: with his back turned. I think it's a brilliant decision on Moffat's part to make the name of the Doctor simply more than just a name.
God, November can not come fast enough! That's a good set-up for the 50th, in fact, that's what this episode really was, the one-hour prelude to the massive Doctor Who event.
I also have to randomly add that I do believe that it won't be the 10th Doctor involved in the 50th Anniversary, but rather the human 10th that is with Rose.
Is it November yet!?!?

Comment by Lisa P on Monday I disagree with you about the ending (and given it's based on a true story, what else are you going to do?)....but the performances were spectacular...I was incredibly surprised by Wynona Ryder actually....but everyone was good.
Comment by Dr. Detfink on Monday Similar to the Place Beyond the Pines, I felt the ending was a bit contrived (as all of these notorious underworld killer stories go) but an acceptable quibble for the performances. Loved all of Shannon's pre-production preparation for this role. Studied the interviews, read the book, and paid close attention to the character's affect. That constant constricted affect that identified him as completely remorseless, detached from any feeling.
This movie should also be commended for the make up. What a BAD wig can do to make Chris Evans look like his head was used to mop up the urinals of CBGBs back in the day.
I even loved Liotta breaking the 4th wall, making a comment about Schwimmer's mustache.
Telling ya, this is going to be the Summer where the REAL Blockbusters are all these independent up and coming directors that 2-3 yrs later people are going to say, "Can't believe I missed that movie and blew my hard earned coin on over priced eye candy and generic re-makes..."
And where is the Press when you need them? They're busy wasting their time defending their opinions on big budget movies that the fan base know better. They just don't want to have to admit, they got played by the studios.
BEST summer ever for the independent film makers. Hands down.
Comment by Lisa P on Monday Still haven't seen Gatsby...finished the book and so sometime this week I will go...now I am feeling a bit more encouraged after what you said Frizzlestick! I did see Iceman though...some amazing acting there....just incredible. Would totally recommend that movie to one and all.

Comment by Frizzlestick on Sunday I don't have an opinion yet on Star Trek, so we'll see how I fare after seeing it tomorrow afternoon.
As far as Gatsby is concerned, I simply do not understand the grievance the critic community had against it. I positively loved it. The acting was top-notch, the sets were beyond spectualar, the music sensational, and it was brilliant adaptation of Fitzgerald's masterpiece.
I did manage to finally read the novel prior to the film and anyone who would say that Luhrmann didn't respect the source material is just bonkers. That man went above and beyond to pay respect to not only Fitzgerald's words in that one book, but him as a writer. It's sad that I don't find myself agreeing with the majority of main-stream reviewers in regards to that film but rather George RR Martin and James Franco. What stick was up everyone's butt when they watched Gatsby and walked out so vindictive to tear down Luhrmann? Baffling really...

Comment by Frizzlestick on May 18, 2013 at 9:55am Wow, fuck the internet review sites this week. From Gawker to Village Voice, fuck them all. Does anyone understand the concept of just noting at the top of talking about the movie that hey, there might be spoilers? Then it gets even worse when the conversation turns into the timeline for posting spoilers.
Here's the rule: as long as you post a big ol' SPOILERS! somewhere at the top of the page, you can post whatever the frack you want. Did everyone have a hard-on for getting the word out on Cumberbatch for Star Trek before the weekend ended? Was there a race or something? Ugh... frustrated...
