Teen Titans #61: This issue is a done in one story focusing on Kid Devil and Blue Beetle. Kid Devil doesn't like Blue Beetle and they both end up going after the same villain forcing them to work as a team. We've all heard this kind of story before. Kid Devils attitude seems pretty bad for no reason this issue. There are things that contribute to that but I don't think they were conveyed very well. Blue Beetle is also portrayed a little more emotional in this book than his own (the art shows him very reactive as opposed to laid back). They really are the TEEN Titans, raging hormones and crazy emotional swings intact. On a positive note there is a nice parallel between Kid Devils situation and the villain Shockwave. There are some nice moments in the issue that tie into the looming threat of the Titans of Tomorrow story. The other thing I liked are some of the progress this series takes by the end of the issue. Though there is one development I'm not too keen on. Overall a hard issue to recommend but decent if your a fan of the series.
A high 2/5: for some fans that just shouldn't wear a Powergirl costume
Blue Beetle #29: This issue starts Mathew Sturges run on the book and from the look of things, it couldn't be in better hands. This issue also sees the return of much missed artist Rafael Albuquerque. Sturges has a handle on these characters that much is certain. Whats great is in he doesn't ease into this run by just recapping the characters and establishing a voice. He picks the series up perfectly and builds steam right away. Right away we have interesting character developments between Paco and Brenda, a new character is introduced, Peacemaker and his new job as border patrol, and some new villain who is trafficking
something through the border with illegal immigrants. Also Jaimie receives character growth showing subtly that hes no rookie anymore. Theres also a golden scene showing how villains earn the mantle of fallen villains. The immigration theme seems like its going to work perfectly in this book. The art is once again great. I can't say enough good about this book. DC has just done a stellar job with Blue Beetle since this book started and this is looking to be a great run which continues what Rogers had done on the title and brings it in a new exciting direction.
Rating: 5/5 for a bunch of Spanish words I don't understand
Green Lantern #33: Wow. Secret Origin continues now on its fifth part but damn its finally hit a point where so much of the material is fresh and new that I can whole heartadly not care that its just an origin story. This story is packed with foreshadowing to the Blackest Night. Scratch that. The issue before this was packed with foreshadowing. This one actually has several revelations. Plus some fucking creepy scenes with William Hand, a more concrete vision of the parallels between Hal and Sinestro, and a better idea behind Hal and Carols romance. Not to mention the great scenes with Hector Hammond and a great look at the new villain Atrocious. Oh and the art is absolutely stellar. Great cliffhanger too. Bring on the next part!
Rating: 5/5 for an obvious Orange Lantern
Justice Society Annual #1: This may be an annual but its really just a continuation of the Gog story running in Justice Society. Actually its a tangent story that looks like it will be running along side it. Powergirl has been returned to her reality of Earth-2. She meets her old friends and gets together with Huntress who is on a quest for revenge. Its well written with great art and is pretty emotional. But. Its got a twist at the end that kind of threw me off and made me question how I felt about this book. But looking back its still poignant and really just a testament to how shaken Powergirls world is at this point. Its a real bitch of a cliffhanger though. I want to have a clue whats going on and its frustrating. In that I feel the plight of the protagonist but hell, the next part can't get here fast enough.
Rating: 3/5 for double the Powergirl boobage
