I have no actual Idea either nor do I care where it came from. I just thought it would make a fun topic. Thanks though for being the only one who bothered to comment.

apparently at the very end of the movie, during that scene in coney island, you can see an object fall from the sky and into the ocean. That is a Taguruato (parent company of Slusho and key website in the viral marketing campaign) satellite that crashed and when the company tried to recover the satellite they discovered the key ingredient of Slusho which they then began to mine. the mining woke the Cloverfield monster which then destroyed the mining station (also in the viral ads) and destroy Manhattan.

there are a bunch of theories but this one seems to make the most sense (which is pretty sad cause it's nearly impossible to figure out).

Well it sounds like you did your homework. Thanks for the info, you are officialy the first person to post a origin theory. Congrats!
