While I was on imdb.com, searching some things, I came across a film title that gave me the idea for this forum discussion.

What movie/s have you seen that tried too hard to make a point or set a certain tone for the movie, that you feel the attempted was over shot? What do you think caused it? The choice of actors? The acting itself? The plot? The dialogue?

To be honest, I felt like the Dark Knight took itself too serious.
The Godfather part 3, that film tried too hard to stuff as much homages from the first two films that it almost became sickening.

one of the most manipulative and dishonest films i have ever seen. this fucking movie should be be put on trial and sentenced to death !
"Kickin It Old School" tried too hard to be funny. Lines were exaggerated. I thought it would be "Malibu's Most Wanted" funny, but no.
From what I've seen of it (and there are a lot of clips available on youtube), this would be my main beef with the otherwise comelling Blood Diamond. It just seemed like every moment they could, they amped the drama to the nth degree, when it really wasn't necessary. Yes, the diamond trade is a serious subject. Yes, these people are suffering and there will be yelling and screaming in real life, too. Yes, small children are being indocrinated in ways that will scar their families and the country for a very long time.

However, because I've seen at least a couple documentaries from Southern Africa on child soldiers, I know that the horro of the situations is of a much quieter kind- there is an unspoken sense of hopelessness and tension, but not every serious moment is bawled at the top of its lungs. It would feel more authentic to me if the drama had been subtler at times.

Some could say that Gangs of New York suffered from this (though I did enjoy it).

The Basketball Diaries (oh heck yes)

Dammit, I know there are others...
