All this talk about how much everyone hated the Oscar choices was fun for a while, but then I stumbled across this article:

 http://badassdigest.com/2012/02/05/why-you-love-movies/

And it made me think:  It's easy to talk about why we hate various movies, but why do we love them.  What makes you keep going to see films despite all the bad movies, remakes and reboots that come out.  What is it about movies that make you watch Grown Ups, Twilight and other terrible movies and make you know they could be better?

Yeah, someone probably made this thread already, but whatever.  I think it needs to be brought up again.

I love movies because they can take me to places I'll never go and show me scenes I'll never see from the perspectives of people I'll never be. The bulk of the films I watch are sci-fi, fantasy and horror. Why watch something about a suburban family and their first world struggles? I've seen enough of that in real life. Show me a dude hang gliding on a pterodactyl, or re-animating the dead, or trying to escape from a prison in orbit around Earth.

This.

I have a friend that studies film and hates fantasy films. He says that they are too unrealistic. No shit, senor.

A friend got me Jarhead on DVD when it came out. Not a bad gesture on his part but as I watched the film this sense of familiarity was so overwhelming that I couldn't enjoy it at all. Now if Swoff and Co. had to track down a robot djin in Saudi Arabia that had the cure for a snake flu outbreak I'd be all up in that shit.

You sir, gives the perfect explanation of why I despise the indie culture.

Sorry, I don't follow.

What I think Zeke is saying is that genre films will always be better than the indie comedy and/or drama because they bring you into another world or do weird things not seen before; Not drag you into the problems of middle class family #00953.

I could be wrong though.

You could be right, but Zeke is definitely wrong, as he always is...

Because of Quints USS Indianapolis monologue.
Because of the Downtown shoot out in Heat
Because "If they move, kill 'em"
Because of Life out of balance
Because of Jupiter and beyond the infinite
Because of candle lit scenes in Barry Lyndon
Because of the kissing montage
Because of Steve McQueen
Because of Seven Samurai
Because "of this fucking tie business"
Because "I am the Nightrider"
Because of my Dad.

I would also have to say The Twilight Zone. Sure, it is a TV show, but it has very cinematic qualities.

Because of the amazing dialogue that makes my imagination flow. Because of the emotional roller-coaster I am put on. Visual Effects that can define a generation. Because of the storytelling that makes me dream my happy dreams or have terror the whole night through and not regret a minute. Because of the Acting that not just makes a character but makes a human being something real. THAT is why I love movies.

Because they can make me feel like utter shit (Requiem For A Dream).
Because I can bitch about them tomorrow.
Because I can fall in love with them and the characters (Casablanca).
Because they can terrify me (Halloween).
Because they can surprise me (The Grey).
Because I can watch my favorite stars do their thing (Steve McQueen).
Because Clint Eastwood is a badass who refuses to pass on any fucking torch.
Because I wait patiently for a director's next movie (Nicolas Winding Refn).
Because they can deeply disturb me, and make me laugh (Happiness).
Because they can bend my vision of reality (Inception).
Because maybe Jennifer Aniston will get nude this time.
Because the twists can genuinely shock me and make me want to scream at the screen (Fight Club).
Because they can propel me into a state of pure meditation (Solaris, The Tree of Life).
Because they can transport me into a different world as fucked up as this one (Pan's Labyrinth).
Because they can do the impossible (Dark City, Blade Runner).
Because I can root for the underdog (Star Wars).
Because I can have an opinion (2001: A Space Odyssey).
So I can spoil the film (The Usual Suspects and Reservoir Dogs).
So I can rate them.
So I can list them.
Because the film can remind me why I adore the cinema (Hugo and The Artist).
Because they can delight me (City Lights, Modern Times, The Gold Rush).
Because they can still feel epic after a bazillion years (The Battleship Potemkin, Gone With The Wind).
Because they can make you witness history or a true story, no matter how uncomprimising (The Pianist, Schindler's List).
Because you can watch them over and over again (The Godfather 1&2).
Because absolutely insane shit can happen, like a charming catfish fucking a princess (Uncle Boonmee).
Because you can introduce them to someone else (Singing in The Rain).
Because you can hate them as much as you want (Gulliver's Travels).
Because you can share your experience with others.

*clap* *clap* *clap* * worldwide applause*!!!!
