Hey I noticed some thing the other day. People are really hard on Rap and Hip-hop music. This was really funny to me because, the more popular artist in rock and hiphop, sing and rap about the same exact things! These things include money, women, and the things money can get you (including women lol). I don't understand why people (mostly rock fans) look down on rap music for its content more than anything else, but have nothing to say when a rock band does the exact same thing.
I was on Youtube, the other day and someone posted that rappers are not intelligent and making really music means you have to be a real "musician". This doesn't make sense to me.
Another interesting fact is that a new band recently made a remake (lyric 4 lyric) of Lil'Waynes "lollipop" and under their video on youtube, it was nothing but "great song" and "way better then lil'wayne's" comments. Maybe someone else can explain this difference in scrutiny?
thats a very good point
i used to be opposed to rap but not i just dont care
i mean most of my favorite bands will never be played at dances and other places
i just had to accept the fact that rap/hip-hop is more popular these days
While I like both hip hop, R&B and rock.
I have to say when did rock ever make a song like these examples.
Not hatin, just saying..
eminem-'97 bonnie and clyde [lyrics] (This was just plain evil)
dr. dre - the day the niggaz took over (This vivid retelling of the 1992 L.A. Riots was nuts)
Kim - Eminem (I have trouble getting through this track, which is more like a movie script than a song)
X is Coming For You - DMX This is from the dark man's first album. Eerie strings accompany X's growl as he speaks of shooting his enemy in front of his family, after raping his victim's 18 year old daughter)
No Tears - Scarface (Face lays some of the most intense lyrics ever over a simple drum beat so that you can hear every word of this story of vengeance)
So back to the point, Rock songs don't say it like these do, so Rap gets the bad rap.
Umm how bout Hammer Smash face by Cannibal Corpse
"Eyes bulging from their sockets
With every swing of my mallet
I smash your fucking head in, until brains seep in
through the cracks, blood does leak
distorted beauty, catastrophe
Steaming slop, splattered all over me
Lifeless body, slouching dead lecherous abcess, where you once had a head" Thats just a little portion of the lyrics
There are plenty of Rock songs that are just as if not more violent than the ones you posted.
But that DMX songs is amazing.
Thats the genius of hip hop, when you can feel that intensity (even when it is violent).
In all fairness, Cannibal Corpse are Death Metal, and a lot of Cannibal Corpse's work is pretty light-hearted and was inspired by horror movies, or very similar to horror movies... well, maybe light-hearted is the wrong word to use, but I'm sure you catch my drift. Maybe "tongue-in-cheek" is a better description
"All our songs are short stories that, if anyone would so choose they could convert it into a horror movie. Really, that's all it is. We like gruesome, scary movies, and we want the lyrics to be like that...there’s nothing ever serious."
-George Fisher
That's the problem with a lot of new metal - they take it way too seriously. Especially deathcore bands, who seem to be "brootal" for the sake of "brootal", or offensive for the sake of offensive.
I think it should also be mentioned that Cannibal Corpse isn't nearly as popular or mainstream as Eminem, Dr. Dre, or DMX.
If we're going to analyze this subject fairly we need to base our comparisons on songs of both genres that are played on the radio and television to mass audiences.
I might be able to agree with your argument but i think Cannibal Corpse is a pretty popular band, i know hard core hip hop heads who are atleast familiar with the name. Also, while the artist he listed are popular those particular songs are not (not to mention none of them has had a hit in a while).
I dont listen to alot of the stuff they play on the radio so someone can correct me if i'm wrong but most of the hip hop songs they play now is the corny pop like stuff "you can dance too" like souja boy (whom i despise) or whatever Kanye West is came out with this month. As a matter of fact i could probably list the top 10 hip hop songs of the moment and i doubt any of them are all that violent.
I've never heard of Cannibal Corpse or ever heard of them being on the radio, but ur right about the popular songs out from hip-hop its really not about anything deep or amazing....their mostly used to play in the background at a house party or club...."feel good" music I like to call it....thats another interesting fact that even critics of hip-hop and rap play only that at there parties. I've never heard someone play rock at a party before....I have to disagree on the Kanye west thing. even tho as a individual he may be an ass, he does rap about things that are significant and I don't think he stands even close to soulja'boy.
I wasnt comparing him to Soulja Boy, he is obviously leaps and bounds more talented than SB. I was just trying to name a popular hip hop artist and he was one of the first people that came to mind.
Dude, have you ever heard certain metal bands (Moxie already beat me to Cannibal Holocaust) or what about Shreaded Nig (granted that's a racist hate band but it is rock) but yeah there's extremes to both forms of music. We have the Q-tips and Slum Village in hip hop too not just the Dr Dres and Eminems and DMXs
I guess people are harder on rap than rock because most rappers don't really put effort into their music, while a lot of rock bands/artists do (even if their music still sucks). Mind you, this is coming from a hip-hop fan.
For example:
Effort:
(I like Kings of Leon, by the way.)
No Effort:
(I wrote a whole blog on this song. Click here to read it.)
