Where Were You When You First Heard About September 11th?

I've found that each generation has a defining moment that you always remember where you were the first time you heard about that event.

For some, it's when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. For others, it's when JFK was assainated. But for most people, it's when September 11th happened when planes hit the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and a field in Somerset, PA by terrorists.

I'll never forget where I was that day, I was in high school in 7th grade, it was a normal day up until about lunchtime at around 11. Usually, they let us go outside once we were done eating but that day, they weren't letting anybody outside and they had all the teachers blocking the doors so nobody could get out. Then, after 12, they started to let everybody go home including myself. I had no idea what was going on until my dad told me what had happened. He had told me that somebody flew a plane into the World Trade Center.

So, as we head into the 10th anniversary of the September 11th attacks, I thought it would be interesting to see if the Spillios remember where they were the day September 11th occured.

So, what have you guys go to say?

Primary 7 (about 10 yrs old), in school, our teacher came into the class room and said the world trade centres had been hit by planes, I can remember at the time I thought it was a couple of factories in the middle of a snowy tundra that printed money, couldn't have been further from the truth.
It was afternoon in England when the first plane hit the World Trade Center. I remember that I was in Year 1 and everyone got called into the school hall, our principal told us what had happened and then we had a moment of silence. It was all a blur. I didn't really know what was going on.
I was 20, and at home (in the UK) with my Mom, we were watching something on TV, can't remember what it was. Then my cousin phoned and told us to turn to the news because one plane had hit the World Trade Center. So we did, and then the second plane hit. We never left that channel, we were in shock. :-(

I was in the 8th grade at the time and was woken up by my radio.  Usually I would hear some alternative rock song on this station's morning show but this time I heard the sound of panic in a reporter's voice as he described what was going on.  Going to the living room, I flipped on the TV and saw the first tower in flames, I just sat their in shock not sure what I should or could do.  Then out of nowhere BAM the second plane hit and all I saw were flames before it flipped back to a bunch of reporters with shocked faces in the studio.  My local news station was pretty mellow and not much activity going on in the background but it seemed like an extremely filled office with people everywhere trying to get info on what was happening.  Instead of going to school that day I just stayed in my living room and trying to fulling understand why someone would do such a thing.

Anyways that's my 2 cents.  Oh and I came across a post to send to 9/11 conspiracy theorists that made me laugh, check it out.

Big fuckoff plane going motherfucking 400mph cuts a shit load of beams.

Jet fuel mixes with the air, creating a big fuckoff explosion. Every fucking thing around it sets on fire.

Wind is blowing through the broken windows, creating a great combustion chamber inside the building (Like constantly blowing on a normal fire)

Remaining beams get weak as fuck at that point.

Floor gives way.

The floors above gain kinetic energy.

And seriously, DO YOU REALIZE HOW MUCH ENERGY THAT "small" SECTION OF THE BUILDING WOULD GAIN FALLING A FEW FEET?

Floors directly below are slightly weakened by the fires, they crush easily.

Kinetic energy is raging.

Noms the rest of the building

a little late on this one...

so the morning of September 11th, i was in bed with a girl engaging in some "extra curricular activities."  went back to sleep next to her, we missed our first classes.  all that morning, people kept calling my phone.  "don't they know i'm a busy, sleepy, horny college student, why are they calling me this early in the morning?"  shut my phone ringer off.  somewhere around 10:30am CST we both got up, and went out to our shuttle van to get to our classes.  never once turned on the TV.

in the shuttle, kept hearing people talking about the governor's mansion, and the trade organizations and centers across the country.  a bit peculiar.  close to pulling in on campus, announcement that a plane hit the world trade center.  i kid you not, my first thought was "what idiot accidentally flew his plane into the trade center."

my way up to class, people are asking if i'm ok.  "why do you ask?"  they know i'm from DC, and the pentagon was hit.  suddenly, i start to piece together what's going on.  i go to the hallway television.  sickening footage of that second plane.  both trade centers, pennsylvania, and the PENTAGON.  where my cousin works as a Major in the Air Force.  starting to tear up now, so i go to class in a haze and a daze.  teacher tells us we should probably just go home, and contact our loved ones.  i walk home instead of taking the shuttle, all the way to the dorms, thinking of my friends and family the whole time.  immediately got on the phone to my parents and my best friend.

i kept myself from turning on the TV for a good five minutes, but i just had to get more information.  didn't matter which channel you were on.  hell, even MTV was showing that footage.  i can't remember a sadder day than that in my life.  nor a happier one when i found out my cousin was ok, everyone was fine.

then, about a year later, i had to deal with some similar stuff because of the DC Sniper.

man, we live in a crazy world sometimes.  i will never forget that day...

i was in my 4th grade class. i was living in the city at the time & we kept getting announcements over the PA saying that planes were flying into buildings. we were kids at the time, so we weren't even thinking terrorist attack; we just thought they were weird coincedences... until the third plane hit the second tower. i think we all knew at that point something was up. as i recall, the order was first tower, pentagon, then second tower. it was awful
