Where Do You Get Your News?
Over the years here in the Spill forum I’ve seen posts of news articles from widely varied sources. Some have come from mainstream entertainment and news sites. Others come from local news sites or those supplying regional coverage. I’ve even seen some posts that straddle the line between information and propaganda. But where do you get your news?
I usually grab a copy of the local rag, the Courier Mail, on the way in to work for reading when I take a break. It’s been labelled as a ‘conservative’ paper and this is often reflected in the way some stories are presented. If there’s a topic I’m particularly interested in, I sometimes seek out articles on a subject from different sources to try to get a balanced picture of what’s going on.
I hardly watch cable news programmes as they’ve generally devolved into running commentary on events rather than the exploration of facts to any depth. It’s usually just blurbs, sound bites, or talking heads. This is OK if you’re only after a cursory overview of an event that’s still evolving, such as the recent New Zealand quake activity or the incident at Fukushima, but not for anything definitive.
Network TV news seems to have taken to sensationalist one-upmanship. Also, I’m not sure about how it is around the world but what’s being passed off as ‘current affairs’ programming here is hardly worth airing, in my opinion.

The really seems like defeatism to me. Two wrongs don't make a right, the existence of propaganda shouldn't excuse the creation of more. I believe there really should be a higher standard than that.

That really shouldn't be that way. Like it or not, there are still people that will believe what they hear from Fox or MSNBC without question, people shouldn't have to base their beliefs on misinformation or biased reporting. Either way, its wrong and has no integrity. I'm fine with opinion shows, of-course, but once that gets into the news, and people start skewing the public perception to fit they're agenda, we really should draw a line.

All there is, is propaganda that's what I'm telling you. There is no objective truth when it comes to politics. We can't escape bias anyone who denies that is a lying hypocrite. John Stewart has his battles with Fox News because of his own biases, not because he hates unbalanced reporting. I know he likes to hide behind the whole I'm a comedian first, and political analyst second thing, but that simply isn't true. His political agenda is the inspiration behind his comedy you can't separate the two.
I don't think there is anything wrong with propaganda. If I believe in something why is it bad to try, and get people to agree with me? You talk about a higher standard who sets the standard? Who gets to decide what's "True", or what's "Propaganda"? People always talk about this standard that used to exist I think they are all just kidding themselves. The people who will believe whatever they are told without question are irrelevant, most of them don't even watch the news, or vote. We can't build society around protecting the stupid, all that does is hold every one back. I'm a history Major anything, and everything I know about History is based off of biased reporting. Most people would tell you that Christopher Columbus discovered North America why do you think most people believe that?
I don't like to sound so disillusioned, but I'm just being realistic.

If you think NPR, and NBC are fair, and balanced then you aren't as perceptive as you think you are, but I am a gentlemen so please give me your preferred brand, and ill give you a virtual cheers as well.

Oh yes, poor little Fox, all alone up against the big bad liberal media machine. Give me a break, Fox is even more popular than the other cable news channels, I will admit; but they are not balancing anything. If they are saying that they are fair and balanced, then they should at least strive to make half way, but when other media outlets call them out on bias, then THEY play the victim card. Media Matters consistently points out fox bias, and misinformation, but all Fox can do is say that Media Matters is attacking Fox on taxpayer dollars, rather than address the issue. I agree that Fox should not hide behind that fair and balance slogan, but while they do, they should report the facts. That goes for all news organizations.

I'm not asking you to feel sympathy for Fox. I just can't understand why people are so afraid of it? There are countless people in the media who I don't agree with, but I don't feel the need to change, or censor their opinion, or format. I just watch them, and disagree until I've had enough, and then change the channel. I think MSNBC is a liberal propaganda machine so I don't support them, if enough people agree with me then they will go off the air. It seems perfectly logical, and democratic to me. I believe the basis for all free society is the Market place of ideas.
Fox has given you as many "facts" as anyone else ever has.

Look at the News of the World, the New York Post, tabloids. Fox Noise does the same thing just on TV. Do you know what they have in common? Owned by News Corp, while on Fox & Friends, they were talking about hording light bulbs, because of the law passed in 2007 to make light fixtures more energy efficient. Seriously? I can agree with you that free speech is the market of ideas, but if you deliberately send out misinformation, you begin to manipulate what ideas are talked about.
MSNBC may lean left, but they do have NBC News as a primary source, MSNBC is commentary, NBC News is news, aside from that, if you watch Rachel Masddow, when she presents something, she does name the source from which it came. They have the facts to back them up on the stories they report. As for Fox who is its own source, go figure.

Depends on the type of news. About actual real world events I like to mix it between liberal and conservative views and try and sort out the bias.
Huffington post, Gawker, Fox news, BBC, CNN, The Blaze, Drudge, Smoking Gun etc I will usually check and see what the headlines are.
Its crazy how each of these sites can take the same story and give it a different spin.
