Where Do You Get Your News?
Over the years here in the Spill forum I’ve seen posts of news articles from widely varied sources. Some have come from mainstream entertainment and news sites. Others come from local news sites or those supplying regional coverage. I’ve even seen some posts that straddle the line between information and propaganda. But where do you get your news?
I usually grab a copy of the local rag, the Courier Mail, on the way in to work for reading when I take a break. It’s been labelled as a ‘conservative’ paper and this is often reflected in the way some stories are presented. If there’s a topic I’m particularly interested in, I sometimes seek out articles on a subject from different sources to try to get a balanced picture of what’s going on.
I hardly watch cable news programmes as they’ve generally devolved into running commentary on events rather than the exploration of facts to any depth. It’s usually just blurbs, sound bites, or talking heads. This is OK if you’re only after a cursory overview of an event that’s still evolving, such as the recent New Zealand quake activity or the incident at Fukushima, but not for anything definitive.
Network TV news seems to have taken to sensationalist one-upmanship. Also, I’m not sure about how it is around the world but what’s being passed off as ‘current affairs’ programming here is hardly worth airing, in my opinion.

I read i, visit bbc news, watch The Daily Show when I can (it's only shown once a week now in Scotland), Channel 4 News is also pretty good.

A wide variety of sources, depending more on my location than anything else.
Home, I get it from Yahoo News, as well as 2-3 other news websites, the 24hr news stations (national and local) or local TV-news.
Another person's home, I get it mostly from the local TV-news station.
On the road, I've got my Sirius radio set for BBC News to listen to whenever I want, and local AM station for weather/traffic during rush hour traffic for reports.

I've admitted many times that Fox News is a conservative news organization. I just think it's funny/hypocritical that I'm supposed to think there is a problem with that. Why can't conservatives have one propaganda machine when liberals control dozens? I wish Fox would stop claiming to be fair and balanced, but I don't think they need to change their approach to news mainly because they use the same approach as anyone else, they just lean the opposite direction.
Why is Fox News the only news source that is constantly under attack for being unbalanced? Does anyone want to try, and argue that MSNBC isn't just as unbalanced? Cuz I'd love to prove that person wrong. I think/know Fox receives the criticism it does because they are the only mainstream news source that leans the "wrong way".
What percentage of Journalists do you think consider themselves conservative?

Well, if that's what they're going for, isn't that just feeding the system? Bias is bias, one way or another, and we cant really say conservative bias is okay because it's "balancing the system" or something. I'm not going to pretend that there isn't liberal bias too, obviously that's not the case, and I hate that as much as Fox and do believe it gets glorified by the majority, but that doesn't excuse what Fox does.
Also, from what I've seen, they tend to... lie. A lot. Granted, I might not have the best perspective on this, but that seems to be the case. For that matter, that's probably why John puts so much focus on them. They are biased to a comedic extent, and remember he's still a comedian as much as a journalist.
Then again, that's just me, I could be wrong, its all open to interpretation.

Well why not? I'm of the opinion that people can choose what to believe, and what not to believe. Regardless of how much misinformation is out there it is still up to the individual to accept it, or reject it. In an ideal world information would be completely true with no agenda behind it, but the world is far from ideal. I also recognize that everything in this world happens for a reason, usually that reason is money, power, and influence. So until corporations get out of the news business (which will be never) then anything, and everything you watch is going to be brought to you by some one with an agenda.
Extremists are usually only popular for awhile anyways. Journalists who are fair and balanced always get more respect, and legitimacy than the shock jocks. So people have a way of weeding out the truly unfair. I mean neither Keith Oberman, or Glenn Beck still have their shows. They are both still doing well, but aren't nearly as vocal as they once were.
