Reading reviews of The Avengers, and several mention one specific moment that is "Overwhelmingly Whedon," "one crucial beat where he gives in to one of his more infamous impulses," etc. The reviews are spoiler free, and so do not elaborate.

Not being a Whedonite myself, what are they talking about? It seems like one very out of place and negative moment in the film. Just curious!

Did his Captain America cards get people to like him?

I know what scene they are talking about, so SPOILERS AHEAD!

Agent Coulson gets stabbed by Loki and dies. Whedon commonly kills a character in every one of his movies.
