The biggest problem I have with it is the character of Jack Torrence. In the book, Jack Torrence is protrayed as a flawed, yet a good man who loves his family and is driven mad by the hotel because he fell into the temptations of wanting the hotel to himself. In the end (Spoillers) he dies by having the hotel get blown up with him, saving his wife and son.

That I found very scary then some nutcase walking around trying to chop somebody up. That's just my grip about the film.
