If it's crap... We'll tell you

I've met plenty of people who damn the Saw and Hostel movie franchises calling them torture porn but most of those people who say that end up being fans of slasher flicks or other horror movies that have a good amount of killing or gore. So I'm just curious, what's so bad about torture porn types of movies (Saw, Hostel, ect) that they are considered a more "harmful" movie than your slasher flicks?

sadly it comes down to this....we in the UK had to put up with very draconian censors for a LONG time....who thought that crappy italian explotation films were going to destroy the moral fabric of the country....helped along by our kneejerk press, who love to demonize...so purely from a personal point of view im just hacked off that people can go and see far worse imagery at a multiplex...when we were all treated worse than zoophiles for wanting to see The Beyond or Bloodsucking freaks...ie sour grapes. plus they are dull dull dull...graphic does not equal horrific...in my opinion.

Personally, I get the horror movie thing. So people like to be scared, that cool.

Torture I just don't get, it seems too real (not that I've seen anyone really get tortured). I can't understand what entertainment value people get from watching a beautiful woman or man scream in pain for 90 minutes.

I'm guessing that because it focuses not on a psycho killing their victims as much as it is about them just hurting them. I love a good horror movie where there are inventive kills and things that make me go wow. But I just get uncomfortable when the victim is just tortured(House of 1000 Corpses) or if someone is being raped(Last house on the Left). After seeing someone helpless after so long it just kinda makes me want to watch something else. I have liked some torture porn movies that have good story lines but when there isn't much to the story it's just about torture then I get bored. The Collector, The First two SAW movies and the first Hostel I enjoyed.

Slasher films are superior IMO because the Killers are usually supernatural, or some kind of unstoppable force. If Jason is on your ass you're done for you can kill him, but he never stays dead long... He will be back, and he will get your ass.

I also like slashers better because they aren't preachy... Saw is the most annoying bullshit ever... I trapped you in this pit of broken glass because you never appreciated life blah blah blah that shit is weak... Jason, or Micheal Myers don't feel the need to give you an explanation cause they're truly crazy as fuck they don't need you to understand they just need to see what your insides look like.

I also don't like torture porn because there is no suspense the victim that you aren't connected to at all is already in the trap... Where's the chase? wheres the hiding behind a couch only to look behind you and discover the killer watching you through the window? Finally the torturers are always real life pussies... I'd beat the fuck out of the saw guy and the hostel guy at the same time... I don't know they come off as annoying a lot more than scary.

I will say though that I don't think that slasher films are somehow more moral I don't have a problem with torture films outside of the fact that they usually suck.

The Collector took those slasher elements and applied them to a torture porn. just puttin it out there...

Actually you bring up a really good point. When they show the torture its not scary because there is no chase the person is already caught. The running part is what's really exciting. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre was scary as hell when I was little because it left what happened behind those closed doors to my imagination. If they had focused on the chopping instead of the chasing the movie would have been boring. I think letting you know that victims are being tortured or chopped into meat without showing you is worse because you begin to imagine what sort of horrors they are going through but never see it.

Texas Chain Saw is Epic one of the scariest films ever made... I don't usually like remakes but I even liked all of those.

couldn't agree more

I personally don't like these kind of movies. Though I really to horror for comedy and awesomeness.

As far as I can see, to really enjoy these films at intense level you would have to enjoy watching the person get tortured.

It's basically blood and gore for the sake of blood and gore, nothing else, no good storyline and not really frightening. Also, what irks me the most is how torture porn movies are somewhat passing off as horror movies, but it isn't scary yet more so disgusting and sometimes causes you to gag reflex and vomit. When I'm watching a horror movie, I want to be scared straight and piss my pants than to watch something utterly disgusting and vomit all over the place. It is just very unappealing IMO.

Point is scary =/= disgusting or at least, 'scary' doesn't have to be 'disgusting' all the time.

THEY ARE WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY!

The difference between the Slasher genre and Torture porn movie genre is that Slashers kill there victims quickly and entertainingly. Torture porn genre, killers tie up there victims, and we the audience watch them all die slow and painful death in the most gross out manner as possible.
