Ok yes, the public generally dislikes the Oscars for being snobbish and elitist with their winners. However, more often than not, they usually pick the films that end up being the classic films of our time. Every year, I anticipate the winners for the Oscars not even so much that I want to agree with the winners (since I don't always do that) but because I love the competition. Rooting for the movie you want to win most really gets my blood pumping and experiencing my reactions of joy/anger is quite exhilarating.

With the announcement of the National Board of Review winners today, it's time for the awards season to begin. So, what do you think will make the shortlists this year? You know the categories and most of the competitors, so get to it (if you care like me of course). I will have mine up soon.

Oh, and here's a link to the winners of the NBR if anyone is curious: http://www.nbrmp.org/awards/

I'm so happy that I stopped watching the Oscars years ago. What a big, pompous circle jerk.
I would really like to see The Visitor win some type of award.
Yeah Fargo did win an award and it is a classic film. I'm not saying Oscars are always right, but I find it fun to see films compete against each other. Plus, don't you all want to see The Dark Knight compete for Best Picture? I'm rooting for it completely.

And yeah, I'd love for The Visitor to get some recognition. That's one of my favorites this year and Jenkins was just amazing.
Im glad some people saw it. I watched it when it came out on DVD and never saw when it hit theaters
Nice predictions. Personally, I'm rooting for The Dark Knight as bet picture but if anyone else beats it, the only other I'd accept is Benjamin Button. I hope it's as good as some of the early reviews say. I hope Brad Pitt is as good I've heard. I hope it will as good as it has been in my dreams. I hope....

Sergio- Yeah, I'm right there with you. I'm hearing good things about Benjamin Button and I want it to do well. Plus, it has the writer of Forrest Gump penning the script and that's one of my all time favorites. And yes, I will root for The Dark Knight since it's one of the few truly Oscar worthy movies I have seen all year.

antithesis- Look, no awards show is perfect, but at least the Oscars hold a little more weight with their picks. It's built itself upon the fact it is prestigious, even if that means it will also carry a degree of pretentiousness with it. However, it's not the show I care about. It's the competition. Seeing my favorites of the year compete with other films is quite satisfying, even when they lose. And saying that and Fargo are for masochists? Ok, what movies do you watch then? I'm not saying this to argue. Just asking what you consider not "masochistic."

I hope to keep predictions updated as the days go by, but in the meantime, does anyone else have any predictions?
Noms for top movie:

Milk
Frost/Nixon
Benjamin Button
Slumdog Millionaire

Winner being Frost/Nixon. Even though I haven't seen it yet, I have incredibly high hopes.
Milk
Wall-E
Slumdog millionare
TDK
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Revolutionary Road
My Fair Lady over Dr. Strangelove.
Oliver! over The Lion In Winter.
Annie Hall over Star Wars.
Chariots Of Fire over Raiders Of The Lost Ark.
Rain Man over Mississippi Burning.
Driving Miss Daisy over My Left Foot.
Shakespeare In Love over Saving Private Ryan.
Dances With Wolves over Goodfellas.
Titanic over The Sweet Hereafter (which wasn't even fucking nominated).
Forrest Gump over The Shawshank Redemption.
American Beauty over The Green Mile.
Chicago over The Pianist.
Gladiator over Traffic.
Crash over Munich.
The Departed over Letters From Iwo Jima.
No Country For Old Men over There Will Be Blood.

Yeah, the Academy really knows how to pick 'em.....
Amen Q. Crash was the best film of that year.

And again Chig, I didn't say they pick it every time, but all of those films you mentioned are great. And heck, the fact those other films were nominated helps them live on beyond their release. Dr. Strangelove didn't win, but it's still a classic particularly because it got nominated. However, My Fair Lady was an incredibly enjoyable film and it's understandable and fine that it won. And I agree with a lot of those winners you disagree with. Forrest Gump is one of my all time favorites, Annie Hall is a comedy classic and Woody Allen's best film, and while There Will Be Blood is incredible, No Country for Old Men was even better.
