If the recording industry as we know it does in fact collapse, what do you think the future of music will be like? Would this be a change for the better or for the worse, and which genres do you think will be most effected? I'm looking forward to good discussion on this!
Permalink Reply by Jordan101 on July 31, 2012 at 12:09pm it wouldn't matter , if the music industry collapsed then more artists would get a chance of being successfull but the hype culture would make sure that a only a few artists would dominate the industry
Permalink Reply by DoctorWitten on September 16, 2012 at 1:50pm Honestly though, with how easy it is nowadays to find music outside the big four record labels, and more importantly, how easy it is for 'independent' labels to make big hits, it wouldnt really matter so much. I've already mentioned more indie sounding bands that have made it big, but there's also labels like UltraRecords who pretty much dominate the electronic dance music scene. some of their videos are getting as many views as Vevo's pop songs. you may not hear them on the radio (at least not on the same stations as gaga) but they're blasting out of every parties' speakers and a lot of high school/college kids' ipods.

Deadmau5, Avicii and Skrillex are all superstars as big as Gaga or Katy Perry without being on the radio (at least in the morning, I've heard them all a few times late at night on the weekend when most top 40 stations play EDM)
